Purpose of Role:

To work as part of the McLaren Automotive Development Team currently based at the McLaren Technology Centre.

 

Role Dimensions:

The Rigs Engineer will report to the Vehicle Development - Rigs and Acquisition Manager and become responsible for aspects of controlling the operation of the Development Rigs test activity on multiple parallel projects

 

Principal Accountabilities:

In this hands-on role, the Rigs Engineer will be accountable for specifying, preparing, conducting, monitoring, analysing and reporting of activities relating to test rigs including but not limited to:

 

  • Create and execute new tests on new technologies where no test standard currently exists
  • Future project programme definition of equipment research and definition for new technologies
  • Test planning and scheduling with strategic management of any outsourced activities/suppliers
  • Define or Influence the selection of the right partners. Developing the relationship, framework and ultimately the capability of the external partners including a clear performance management process
  • Ensure lessons learned are recorded, documented, and implemented into future programmes by means of the BCR system/testing standards library
  • Strategically create and define testing standards where necessary to standardise testing across McLaren products, taking industry benchmarks and best practice into account
  • Defining and recording KPIs for departmental delivery to higher management
  • Ensure all Rigs test equipment is in a calibrated state before use. Maintain calibration database.
  • Cross pollenate acquisition equipment into Rigs and Vehicles
  • Departmental purchasing
  • Responsible for defining appropriate IT hardware to operate and integrate with our rigs
  • Management of test data safety (backup, synchronisation, sharing etc.) and software updates and configuration
  • Assist in Lab maintenance and development
  • Supporting CAPEX definitions
  • Maximise personal performance and development
  • Use knowledge and experience gathered during testing to influence and improve the quality of design

 

 

Knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent.
  • Able to demonstrate experience of the use of servo hydraulic frames and actuators together with acquisition methods and technologies within the test and development arena.
  • Able to apply detailed technical knowledge to the understanding of new technologies, development of engineering designs and resolution of engineering problems.
  • IT literate and highly competent in the use of multiple packages and platforms
  • Sound commercial and financial awareness

 

Key skills are an advantage:

  • Software configuration and operation for multi-channel durability simulations would be beneficial.
  • MTS software knowledge an advantage.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory test equipment including pneumatic control systems.
  • Materials testing techniques.
  • Vehicle bus systems including CAN and Ethernet.
  • Structural monitoring technologies such as strain gauging and ultrasonic.
