Lead Tyre Engineer

Location: Woking, GB

The purpose of this role is to lead the tyre engineering program for McLaren Racing’s non-F1 motorsport activities.

Extracting maximum performance from the tyres is one of the key elements of being successful in motorsport and is the primary objective of this role. The successful applicant will work with other team members focused on simulation and vehicle performance to develop and enhance methods and processes to improve analysis, tyre modelling, correlation and ultimately performance exploitation.

We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced engineer who approaches problems with a rigorous, analytical approach whilst being capable of performing in the high-pressure environment. You will need to be able to use your own initiative, work proactively and often to strict timelines, collaborating across many groups and departments in the engineering office.

The Role:

You will be responsible for:

  • Analysis of track data to assess the tyre performance accurately and quickly to strict deadlines during race and test events.
  • Developing the methods and processes used for the tyre performance analysis.
  • Working with and developing advanced race tyre models
  • Utilising rig and track data to enhance correlation for simulation and DIL purposes
  • Work with simulation, vehicle performance and track engineers to maximise tyre exploitation and aid performance prediction
  • There may be some limited opportunities for travel to support test or race events as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Educated to Masters level in Engineering or related discipline
  • Proven experience in tyre and performance analysis, preferably in F1
  • Extensive knowledge of tyre and vehicle dynamics
  • Experienced using MATLAB or a similar programming language

Personal Attributes:

  • A team player but with the initiative to make own decisions and work with minimal supervision.
  • Self-starter, able to identify requirements independently, then make proposals for solutions.
  • Able to work under pressure, to tight deadlines, often with ever-changing priorities.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and analytical approach, with attention to detail.
  • Aptitude to learn from others and share knowledge with others.
  • Flexible approach to working hours.
