Design Engineer - Mechanical

Purpose of the role:

Responsible for packaging, detailed design & release of components and subsystems within the Hybrid area. This can include battery housings, cabling, connectors, LV components, and cooling systems. You’ll be working across all of our programmes on multiple systems, from concept through to production.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Conceptual and detailed design, including 3D packaging and design studies
  • Supporting design releases and 2D drafting
  • Packaging Energy Storage Systems (ESS) components in new powertrain architecture and installations
  • Progressing concepts through to detailed design, prototype, and production
  • Creating CAD models and assemblies using surfacing, solid modelling, and harness routing techniques
  • Understanding the package constraints for the ESS. Working with ESS suppliers, McLaren mock-up team, and dimensional management team to ensure package targets are met
  • Working with ESS Project Engineers to ensure design solutions meet attribute targets such as NVH, thermal, durability, and performance
  • Ensuring the ESS components interface into the wider car including structural, EDS, cooling components, and body panels
  • Supporting links with external organisations such as universities and research organisations on collaborative projects

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • CATIA V5 experience (2D and 3D)
  • Experience of design and release of moulded plastic/ machined or fabricated metal or similar
  • Experience of designing systems such as hoses, pipes, pumps, tanks, heat exchangers
  • It would also be beneficial (but not essential) to have prior knowledge of electrical systems including eMotors, control units, chargers, converters
