Job Title: Design Engineer, ESS

 

Department: Powertrain – Hybrid

 

Reporting to:  Engineering Manager or Principal Engineer, Energy Storage Systems (ESS)                                                                                                          

 

 

Purpose of the Role:

 

Responsible for packaging, detailed design & release of ESS on all vehicle projects, from concept to production ensuring the design supports system technical specifications).

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Programme specific ESS attribute delivery/support, managing design releases, supporting specifications, DVPs, DFMEAs, BCR (QCRs)
  • ESS simulation (where required)
  • Battery Management System support and delivery
  • Design-focussed vehicle level meetings for ESS integration

 

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Work alongside ESS, Hybrid Electrical System (HES) and Hybrid Control Systems (HCS) project engineers to package ESS on new powertrain architecture and installations, progressing concepts through to executing detailed designs for prototype and production release and manufacture.
  • Understands and supports the package constraints for the ESS.  Working with ESS suppliers, Concept teams & DMU to ensure programme specific ESS meet technical and package targets and to deliver detailed designs on time to predetermined quality, cost and weight targets, within DFM requirements
  • Support links with external organisations such as universities, research organisations, etc. on collaborative research projects that will help McLaren deliver innovation in ESS technologies where appropriate. This would include research projects with universities or other like minded organisations collaborating with the Engineering Manager/Principal Engineer of ESS and Head of Hybrid to exploit such opportunities.
  • Works with the other designers and the ESS supplier to achieve efficient, innovative and lightweight designs.
  • Ensure design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets in NVH, thermal, durability, visibility & performance related attributes (power, emissions, and response).
  • Ensures the ESS interface seamlessly to the wider car including structural interfaces & body panels.
  • Preparation and presentation of material to support external and internal project status reviews
  • Provide support on ESS technical risk management to ensure project delivery, optimised vehicle performance and delivery of hybrid system attributes.
  • Guarantee ESS delivery to the specific vehicle programme requirements including:
  • Component Specification which specifies integration requirements for ESS with other Hybrid Electrical System (HES) components.
  • Hybrid System FMEA, ESS FMEAs, System and ESS DVP, Support Vehicle / Hybrid System level test specifications
  • ESS planning, timing & delivery including design, release, ECR/ECN in line with ETRS requirements, development and validation plans
  • Robust concerns resolution 
  • Vehicle build & development support
  • Support delivery of ESS for all projects in line with MDP (McLaren Development Process) and that Project Management KPIs are on track       

 

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • A good level of technical knowledge & experience of ESS design, test & production delivery
  • Ability to support ESS mechanical design, packaging & release preferred
  • Good CATIA V5 2D/3D skills with GD&T application experience
  • Integration of ESS embedded systems such as Battery Management System (BMS)
  • Understanding of Li-Ion technologies, Ultra/Supercapacitor storage solutions, BMS, Functional Safety and High Voltage Switchgear design
  • Support ESS Manager and/or Principal Engineer ESS, in cell, module and pack testing to facilitate data gathering and analysis
  • Support testing with HiL (Hardware in the Loop) and Rig systems to prove integration quality
  • Design / implementation high or low voltage electrical distribution systems within the ESS
  • Support execution of ESS DVPs, FMEA and DFM plans
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products. 
  •  Experienced in OEM or tier one component delivery

 

Qualifications and Training

Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above

  • Good team skills, willingness to work cross-functionally with excellent communication skills.

  • Good systems design and development knowledge
  • Support in component release management and problem solving.
