Track 25 and McLaren Automotive’ s growing reputation is testament to our world class employees. To ensure McLaren Automotive continues to be at the forefront of the Automotive market, we are looking for a Design Engineer – Energy Storage Systems (ESS) to join our Powertrain – Hybrid team. 
Purpose of the role:

As a Design Engineer– Energy Storage Systems (ESS), you will be responsible for packaging, detailed design & release of ESS on all vehicle projects, from concept to production ensuring the design supports system technical specifications).

Principal accountabilities:

  • Programme specific ESS attribute delivery/support, managing design releases, supporting specifications, DVPs, DFMEAs, BCR (QCRs).
  • Energy Storage Systems (ESS) simulation (where required).
  • Battery Management System support and delivery.
  • Design-focussed vehicle level meetings for ESS integration.
  • Work alongside ESS, Hybrid Electrical System (HES) and Hybrid Control Systems (HCS) project engineers to package Energy Storage Systems (ESS) on new powertrain architecture and installations, progressing concepts through to executing detailed designs for prototype and production release and manufacture.
  • Understand and support the package constraints for the Energy Storage Systems (ESS).  Work with Energy Storage Systems (ESS) suppliers, Concept teams & DMU to ensure programme specific Energy Storage Systems (ESS) meet technical and package targets and to deliver detailed designs on time to predetermined quality, cost and weight targets, within DFM requirements.
  • Support links with external organisations such as universities, and research organisations, on collaborative research projects that will help McLaren deliver innovation in Energy Storage Systems (ESS) technologies where appropriate. 
  • Work with the other designers and the Energy Storage Systems (ESS) supplier to achieve efficient, innovative and lightweight designs.
  • Ensure design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets in NVH, thermal, durability, visibility & performance related attributes (power, emissions, and response).
  • Ensure the Energy Storage Systems (ESS) interface seamlessly to the wider car including structural interfaces & body panels.
  • Prepare and present material to support external and internal project status reviews.
  • Provide support on Energy Storage Systems (ESS) technical risk management to ensure project delivery, optimised vehicle performance and delivery of hybrid system attributes.
  • Guarantee Energy Storage Systems (ESS) delivery to the specific vehicle programme requirements.
  • Support delivery of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for all projects in line with MDP (McLaren Development Process) and that Project Management KPIs are on track.

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above.
  • A good level of technical knowledge & experience of ESS design, test & production delivery.
  • Proven automotive design and development experience.
  • Ability to support Energy Storage Systems (ESS) mechanical design, packaging & release preferred.
  • Good CATIA V5 2D/3D skills with GD&T application experience.
  • Integration of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) embedded systems such as Battery Management System (BMS).
  • Understanding of Li-Ion technologies, Ultra/Supercapacitor storage solutions, BMS, Functional Safety and High Voltage Switchgear design.
  • Technical knowledge in high performance Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and Hybrid Electrical System (HES) engineering.
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.          
  • Experienced in OEM or tier one component delivery
