Systems Engineer, Power Battery Systems

Track 25 and McLaren Automotive’ s growing reputation is testament to our world class employees. To ensure McLaren Automotive continues to be at the forefront of the Automotive market, we are looking for a Senior Power Battery Systems Engineer to join our Electric Drive Technology team.

Purpose of the role:

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you’ll be responsible for leading the design, integration, and delivery of power battery systems (batteries with a focus on high power) from concept to production. You’ll be responsible for ensuring they fulfil all programmes requirements such as functionality, cost, and timing, and supporting junior colleagues in system design and supplier management.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Ownership of the energy storage systems (ESS), and working with suppliers and Designers to achieve effective, innovative, lightweight designs
  • Managing attribute delivery and releases for ESS, and leading assembly, simulation, and supplier management
  • Guiding ESS Designers to deliver detailed designs on time, to cost, quality, and weight targets
  • Working with and influencing the vehicle programme and engineering management teams to ensure Electric Drive Technology team collectively deliver whole vehicle targets
  • Participating in vehicle level meetings for ESS integration into wider Hybrid systems and vehicle
  • Due to the package and spatial constraints, working closely with ESS suppliers, McLaren Concept team, Digital Mock-Up team, Dimensional Management team to ensure the systems meet programme targets
  • Establish links with universities and research organisations that will help McLaren innovate and progress in battery system technologies
  • Delivering designs that meet key attribute targets including power, durability, performance
  • Managing ESS integration into wider car including structural concerns, electrical distribution system, cooling components, and body panels

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Degree level (or equivalent) qualification in relevant engineering field
  • Detailed knowledge & experience in design and production of energy storage systems and power batteries
  • Background in automotive design & development
  • Experience of package/ spatial constraints in system design
  • Experienced in 2D/ 3D design (ideally in Catia)
  • Understanding of li-ion technologies, storage solutions, battery management systems, hybrid systems, high voltage switchgear design
