System Line Manager - Body

Track 25 and McLaren Automotive’ s growing reputation is testament to our world class employees. To ensure McLaren Automotive continues to be at the forefront of the Automotive market, we are looking for a System Line Manager - Body to join our Body Engineering team. 

Purpose of the role:

  • Lead Pre-G0 System Line projects for the Body Engineering department. Ensuring the advance, and cross-line component and system are developed and handled to the “Delivery phase” robustly via MDP to be delivered on time and budget. 
  • Work within a matrix organization with direct report to the Body Director, whilst being the primary point of contact for the Engineering Director - Platform for the Body Engineering team activities (Body In White, Body Exterior, Body Interior).
  • Accountable for the budget and time for the Advance and cross-line Body components and System in development till the handover to the delivery phase
  • Line manage the Body team involved in the Advance and cross-line Body components and systems.  
  • The role is multi cross functional to include Body engineering and all supporting functions of Purchasing, Logistics, Supplier Quality Assurance (SQA), Manufacturing Engineering and Quality to ensure all components are engineered simultaneously for on time delivery to cost, weight and vehicle attributes.
  • Ensure together with the attribute owner the Design and Engineering integrity to exceed quality, performance and commercial goals.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Project Management:
  • Represent Body for the Finance, Project and Project Performance System Line meetings and report back to the New Platform Team and the Body department. Represent Body together with Body Managers and Principals at Attribute meetings.
  • Support the Crossline Project Coordinator to create and maintain Systems Body PreG0 HLP during the Technology Readiness (TR) Gateways. Create and maintain any further detail of any System plan. Work with Body Managers, Principals and Coordinators to ensure the System Body PreG0 HLP is consistent with development plan, gateways and TR sign-off timing.
  • Agree the Body solutions requiring PoC to prove their feasibility with Project Chief Engineer, Head of Advance Engineering, Body Vehicle Line Managers and Principals.
  • Prepare and Present Body MDP slides to PreG0 project gateways and boardwalks, contents owned by Body Managers.
  • Create and maintain the System spec book for Body, supported by the Chief Engineer.
  • Support decision meetings with concise, accurate technical and project information.
  • Ensure consequences of decisions are understood and fed back into targets, budgets and plans.
  • Lead cross departmental/functional communication by use of simultaneous engineering teams.
  • Finance:
  • Accountable for managing the full PreG0 budget for the System Line across the Body department, including internal and external head count, tooling investment, D&D and BOM cost.
  • Target setting of above budgets in agreement with each Body team.
  • Responsible for staying within the approved Body budget and for updating Finance with any rebalancing made between the individual Body budget lines supported by Body Principals/Managers.
  • Component Delivery:
  • Responsible to handover to the Project Delivery Phase the Technology Readiness (TR) of Body Systems according to the MDP PreG0 Gateways. 
  • Support the Vehicle Line Managers of Body Engineering.
  • Delivery of all the PreG0 Body components to the engineering process, on budget and time.
  • Lead and work with the supply chain and directly with suppliers to ensure that best value for money and performance is achieved at the TR Gateways together with development of supply base. 
  • ETRS – manage design release process through ETRS for the whole Body group to deliver TR as per Gateways.
  • When requested, ensure DFM is followed via simultaneous engineering teams to complement ETRS timing.
  • Attribute Delivery:
  • Delivery of all Body’s subjective and objective attributes during the TR process, on budget and time.
  • Support the Body Managers and Principals with the requirements for PoC testing ahead of feasibility approval.
  • Working cooperatively with CVT/Powertrain/Control/Electrical/Concept to deliver Body cross-functional attributes, hardware owners, responsible for ensuring their systems/components meet attribute requirements.
  • Ensure the Body Principals maintain the project objective and subjective attribute tracker.
  • Support the Body content at drive events as required.
  • Engineering process:
  • During the TR phase, generate and maintain the RAT for Body when required by the system complexity.
  • During the TR phase, review and approve the DFMEAs for Body when required by the system complexity.
  • During the TR Phase, ensure all DVPs are generated online with the DFMEAs when required by the system complexity.
  • During the TR Phase make sure Body QCRs are contained within 24 hours.
  • During the TR Phase make sure Body QCRs must be solved in line with the McLaren PPS system including a robust understanding and dissemination of lesson learnt that are aimed at avoiding problem repetition and continuously improving our cars and the Company as a whole.
  • Ensure the DVP for each Body team is completed as per MDP requirements.

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Mechanical or Automotive Engineering Degree. 
  • PHD in Mechanical Engineering advantageous.
  • Formal management qualifications advantageous.  
  • In depth experience in automotive product development or project leadership function.
  • An experienced automotive leader of direct and indirect teams.
  • Experienced in an OEM or tier one with a high level of Body and Body Attribute systems technical knowledge.
  • Proven ability in delivery project management within an APQP or similar framework.
  • Experience of high volume and niche vehicle (low volume) programmes.
  • CATIA V5, PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.
  • Knowledge of Body materials and processes, NVH and CAE Simulation and Analysis tools and processes. 
  • Sound commercial and financial awareness.
