We now have an opportunity for a talented Structural Engineer, specialising in Carbon Fibre Composites and Aluminium Alloys, to join our team based in Sheffield.


Despite more than 30 years of history in making carbon fibre race and sports cars, at McLaren we believe in a future aggressive rate of innovation in carbon fibre composites design and technology. We are looking for an individual that shares our vision on carbon fibre and will help us turning this vision into real, innovative and outstanding sports cars.


Principal accountabilities for position

  • Reporting to the Principal Structural Engineer, working on a wide range of systems and components such as Closures, Crash Structures, Monocoques, Subframes, and other vehicle assemblies
  • Working within a cross functional team from R&D stage, through concept and design release, the role will support multiple programmes across McLaren Track 22 models


Principal responsibilities for position

  • Testing
    • Responsible to identify, develop and validate methodologies for the testing of composite and metallic materials for static and dynamic properties
    • Responsible to deploy the methodology across all internal and external resources involved in the engineering process. This is to be achieved through authoring test specifications, training of resources, auditing and general work collaboration
    • Responsible to deliver the testing of composite and metallic materials through management of external specialist resources and testing houses
    • Responsible to generate and maintain material databases


  • Simulations
    • Responsible to generate material cards to support linear and non-linear simulations.
    • Responsible for the simulation of tests at component/system level as required, in order to deliver the Design Validation Plan


  • Support technical standardization of best practices in testing of composite and metallic structural components
  • Support the implementation of facilities for in house destructive and non-destructive testing when required


  • Support the delivery of designs release on time that meet the following targets through coordination of internal and external design resources:
    • Cost (Piece, Tooling, D&D)
    • Performance (As specified through the full vehicle attributes and cascaded down to Component level technical and quality specification)
    • Manufacturing Feasibility (supporting in house manufacturing/assembly processes as well as supplied components)
    • McLaren Automotive Design Standards
  • Support the definition of test methods, through authoring test procedure specifications and through the execution of component/system level tests when required.
  • Support the project team in the definition of the Design Validation Plan.
  • Support a cross-functional team including external suppliers network, quality, logistics, vehicle engineering and development, purchasing and manufacturing engineers


Knowledge, skills and experience for position

  • Proven experience in testing and simulation of composite and metallic structures for Automotive applications
  • Proven experience in testing and simulation of structural bonded joints
  • Knowledge of Hyperworks, LS-DYNA, Abaqus Explicit.
  • Engineering degree 2:1 or above
  • Knowledge of following Carbon Fibre composites manufacturing technologies would be advantageous
    • Pre-preg and Autoclave
    • RTM (High/Low pressure, VARTM)
    • Press Moulding
    • Hand layup, press forming, braiding, filament winding
    • AFP, ATL
  • Knowledge of composite destructive and non-destructive testing
  • Knowledge of DFMEA and its application in automotive environment
  • Literacy in CATIA V5 or V6, CDM or VPM and DMU tools
  • Experience in problem solving is preferable
  • Experience in project management would be advantageous
