Purpose of the Role:


Manage an internal change programme to establish formal Project Management Office capabilities for McLaren Applied Technologies. The post holder will ensure that the required competence, process and working practices are acquired and deployed over a 3-6 month period, through a high degree of stakeholder engagement, to drive adoption throughout the business.


Role Dimensions:


The post holder will work across multidisciplinary teams to lead the delivery of internal process and capability development. There are no direct reports or function budgetary responsibility, however the post holder will be responsible for the project budget of active change projects within their portfolio.


The role requires an exceptional understanding of programme management and project management best practice including product and service development principles. A thorough understanding of other business functions is vital to support creation and delivery of information management services that underpin the effective operation of a PMO.


The ability to guide functional and business unit management teams through a milestone based project process to deliver operational change is vital. Coaching and supporting functional owners and project managers in the adoption of new ways of working is a core function of the role.


The post holder may be required to work unsociable hours to accommodate project demands. The post holder will primarily be based at Woking MTC but may be required to spend some time at other locations.



Principal Accountabilities:


  • Contribute to the enhancement of in-house project management methodology by ensuring best practice PMO capabilities are created through a change programme.
  • Ensure appropriate engineering frameworks and best practices are considered and incorporated into the project framework and information services provided. eg concurrent engineering, software Agile methodologies, v model for safety critical applications etc.
  • Providing fact based Processes and Key Performance Information to support effective Project Portfolio management and enable executive level visibility of company execution performance.
  • Provide operating practice leadership and support, giving both business unit and project management teams the guidance to ensure successful delivery of projects within a balanced portfolio.
  • Enable effective business process integration of Project Management data management.
  • Manage and motivate business unit teams in the adoption of standardised operational practices for Programme and Project Management
  • Lead customer stakeholder management for the project/programme.
  • Manage change project deliverables in line with the project plan and business case with full accountability for the project budget and business benefit.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate capability release plans.
  • Active management of risks, issues and opportunities including management of change from a defined commercial/technical baseline.
  • Work with Resource owners to manage and resolve potential resource conflicts. Assist in planning future staff, skill and tool requirements.
  • Project governance & stakeholder management - present monthly reports defining progress, exceptions and solutions.



Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:


  • Degree qualification or equivalent combination of education and work experience in Business Administration, engineering or computer science.
  • A combination of strong commercial and engineering acumen with relevant experience on providing PMO services for stage gated projects within a broad base dynamic environment. 
  • 8+ years’ experience in programme management/team leadership position delivering substantial change in a product development or consultancy environment.
  • Experience in delivering mixed discipline engineering solutions with exposure to development planning in collaborative environments such as Atlassian and MS VSO as well as traditional stage gated processes is a distinct advantage.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment of constant change.
  • Proven ability to work both across and vertically in medium size organisations.
  • A good knowledge and application of methods, tools and applications in a high-tech data driven business.
  • Experience in a regulated development environment such as medical instrumentation a distinct advantage.
  • Excellent people management, interpersonal and communications skills.
  • A strong negotiator and influencer both internally and externally.
  • Balanced skills to see and understand the big picture while managing the important details as required.
  • Strong decision making and analytical/problem solving skills
