Purpose of the Role:

Manage technically complex product and solution development with a high degree of customer and supplier engagement.The post holder will ensure that projects within McLaren Applied Technologies are delivered on time, to budget and to the required quality standard on behalf of the Project Board.

Role Dimensions:

The post holder will work across multidisciplinary teams to lead the delivery of product development with a degree of outsourced work. There are no direct reports or function budgetary responsibility however the post holder will be responsible for the project budget of active projects within their portfolio.

The role requires a good understanding of programme management, project engineering and outsourcing management. A good working knowledge of other business functions required to support the delivery of products and services will enable the role holder to correctly identify and manage the required tasks for a successful outcome.

The ability to guide a multi-organisation project team through a milestone based product creation process to deliver safe and effective products is vital. Coaching and supporting chief engineers in the task breakdown and reflection into project plans with effort estimation is a core function of the role.

A good commercial understanding to correctly position customer engagement, task facilitation and coaching skills are important within the role.

The post holder may be required to work unsociable hours to accommodate project demands. The post holder will primarily be based at Woking MTC but may be required to spend some time at other locations.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Manage  project teams on behalf of commercial partners through the application of project engineering and supplier delivery processes to deliver results.
  • Provide leadership through a project delivery framework, managing, motivating and guiding both internal teams and suppliers to ensure successful delivery.
  • Support final stages of pre-sales activities to ensure that the project scope, goals, responsibilities, deliverables and business case have been appropriately defined.
  • Ensure appropriate engineering frameworks and best practices are followed eg concurrent engineering, software Agile methodologies, v model for safety critical applications etc.
  • Direct supplier work packages and deliveries in line with the project plan with full accountability for the project budget and margin.
  • Lead the planning and start-up of projects, both internally (eg resource requirements, cash-flow considerations) and externally (eg customer stakeholders, suppliers).
  • Understand the technical deliverables to a sufficient level to engage in discussions covering customer requirements, prioritisation, issue identification and scope.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate project and product release plans and lead customer stakeholder management for the project
  • Active management of risks, issues and opportunities including management of change from a defined commercial/technical baseline.
  • Work with Resource owners to manage and resolve potential resource conflicts. Assist in planning of future staff, skill and tool requirements.
  • Project governance & stakeholder management - present monthly reports defining progress, exceptions and solutions.
  • Contribute to the further enhancement of in-house project management methodology by ensuring best practice product development practices are incorporated.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Engineering degree qualification or equivalent combination of education and work experience in engineering, computer science or software development.
  • A combination of strong commercial and engineering acumen with relevant experience. 
  • 5+ years’ experience in programme/project management/team leadership in product development with a focus on large projects with outsourced capability.
  • Proven ability to deliver mixed solutions in a dynamic environment with significant experience of planning and executing in traditional stage gated processes as well as exposure in collaborative planning environments such as Atlassian.
  • A strong negotiator and influencer both internally and externally.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment of constant change and pressure
  • Proven ability to deliver results using outsourcing suppliers.
  •  A good knowledge and application of delivery and quality control methods in a high-tech engineering business is required.
  • Experience in a regulated development environment such as medical instrumentation a distinct advantage.
  • Excellent people management, interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Balanced skills to see and understand the big picture while managing the important details as required.
  • Strong decision making and analytical/problem solving skills
