The Programme and Project Management group collaborates across Applied Technologies’ organisation to create cutting edge, commercially viable products, services and digital assets. We develop solutions for our world-class partner companies and create our own go-to-market innovations.  Our team provides the facilitation of product creation and delivery across business and engineering functions through Programme and Project Management roles supported by a Project Management office and lifecycle process.

Purpose of the Role:

Manage technically complex Motorsport electronics projects with a high degree of customer interaction and supplier engagement.  These projects are at the pinnacle of Motorsport technology developing on car electronic systems that record, process and transmit high volume telemetry data back to control. The post holder will ensure that projects within McLaren Applied Technologies are delivered on time, to budget and to the required quality standard on behalf of Customers to win races.

Role Dimensions:

The post holder will work across multidisciplinary teams in a matrix structure to lead the delivery of product development. The post holder will be responsible for the project budget of active projects within their portfolio and the daily project leadership of assigned teams.

The ability to proactively guide a multi-organisation project team through a milestone based product creation process to deliver safe and effective products is vital. Coaching and supporting lead engineers in the task breakdown and reflection into project plans with effort estimation is a core function of the role.

The role requires a high degree of technical development knowledge across mixed engineering disciplines in a concurrent engineering environment. This includes an understanding of engineering processes and outsourced development management with the ability to apply these skills effectively within a milestone governance framework.  A good working knowledge of other business functions required to support the delivery of products and services will enable the role holder to correctly identify and manage the required tasks for a successful outcome.

A good commercial understanding to correctly position customer engagement, task facilitation, influencing and coaching skills are important within the role.

The post holder may be required to work flexibly to accommodate project peak demands. The post holder will primarily be based at Woking but may be required to spend some time at other locations.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Lead and manage project teams to deliver electronic products by the application of project engineering and supplier delivery processes.
  • Provide leadership, giving commercial and process guidance to teams both internal and supplier to ensure successful delivery.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate project and product release plans and lead customer stakeholder management for projects.
  • Active management of risks, issues and opportunities including management of change from a defined commercial/technical baseline.
  • Support final stages of pre-sales activities to ensure that the project scope, goals, responsibilities, deliverables and business case have been appropriately defined.
  • Ensure appropriate engineering frameworks and best practices are followed eg concurrent engineering, software Agile methodologies, v model for safety critical applications etc.
  • Manage Project supplier work packages and deliveries in line with the project plan and business case with full accountability for the project budget and margin.
  • Lead the planning and start-up of projects, both internally (eg resource requirements, cash-flow considerations) and externally (eg customer stakeholders, suppliers).
  • Understand the technical deliverables to a sufficient level to engage in discussions covering customer requirements, prioritisation, issue identification and scope.
  • Work with Resource owners to manage and resolve potential resource conflicts. Assist in planning of future staff, skill and tool requirements.
  • Project governance & stakeholder management - present monthly reports defining progress, exceptions and solutions.
  • Contribute to the further enhancement of in-house project management methodology by ensuring best practice product development practices are incorporated.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience required:

  • Engineering degree qualification or equivalent combination of education and work experience in electronic product design from concept to manufacturing and support.
  • Proven ability to manage the development and delivery of electronic systems that include control electronics and wireless communication modules to demanding size and weight constraints.
  • Significant experience of planning and executing in a stage gated process with a flexible “can do approach” and great stakeholder communication.
  • Proven use of innovative ways to mitigate delivery risks associated with high profile projects and engage closely with stakeholders over technical dependencies. 
  • A combination of strong commercial and engineering acumen with relevant experience. 
  • 5+ years’ experience in programme/project management/team leadership in technical product development with a focus on technically complex solutions.
  • A strong negotiator and influencer both internally and externally.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment of constant change and pressure working to challenging deadlines and rolling up sleeves to help wherever necessary.
  • A good knowledge and application of production and quality control methods in a high-tech engineering business is required
  • Experience in a regulated development environment to defined process and quality standards such as medical instrumentation or the automotive industry a distinct advantage as is the ability to deliver results using outsourcing suppliers.
  • Excellent people management, interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Balanced skills to see and understand the big picture while managing the important details as required.
  • Strong decision making and analytical/problem solving skills.
