The Programme and Project Management team collaborates across Applied Technologies’ organisation to orchestrate the creation of cutting edge, commercially viable products, services and digital assets. As a member of our team you will be leading cross functional project teams of dynamic experts to create products that solve challenging problems across a variety of sectors.  McLaren products and solutions range from electronic systems for prestigious motorsport series to low power microelectronics for health care, heavily involving software, modelling and decision science. 

The role

The Senior Project Manager will manage the development and delivery of low power microelectronics solutions to deliver innovative miniature wireless telemetry products for health and other industries. With a high degree of customer and supplier engagement the successful candidate will ensure that projects within McLaren Applied Technologies are delivered on time, to budget and to the required quality standard on behalf of customers.

You will work across multidisciplinary teams in a matrix structure to lead the delivery of product development. You will be responsible for the project budget of active projects within their portfolio and the daily project leadership of assigned teams. You will have the ability to proactively guide a multi-organisation project team through a milestone based product creation process to deliver safe and effective products is vital. Coaching and supporting lead engineers in the task breakdown and reflection into project plans with effort estimation is a core function of this role.

The role requires a high degree of technical development knowledge across mixed engineering disciplines in a concurrent engineering environment. This includes an understanding of engineering processes and outsourced development management with the ability to apply these skills effectively within a milestone governance framework.  A good working knowledge of other business functions required to support the delivery of products and services will enable the role holder to correctly identify and manage the required tasks for a successful outcome. A good commercial understanding to correctly position customer engagement, task facilitation, influencing and coaching skills are important within the role.

You may be required to work flexibly to accommodate project peak demands. You will primarily be based at Woking but may be required to spend some time at other locations.


  • Engineering degree qualification or equivalent combination of education and work experience in advanced electronic product design from concept to manufacturing.
  • Significant experience of planning and executing in a stage gated process with a flexible “can do approach” and great stakeholder communication.
  • 5+ years’ experience in programme/project management/team leadership in technical product development with a focus on technically complex solutions.

Skills and expertise

  • Proven ability to lead development and delivery of high volume microelectronic products through to mass production and apply value engineering practices post launch.
  • A good knowledge and application of production and quality control methods in a high-tech engineering business is required as is an understanding of component supplier management.
  • Proven use of innovative ways to mitigate delivery risks associated with high profile projects and engage closely with stakeholders over technical dependencies. 
  • A combination of strong commercial and engineering acumen with relevant experience. 

Personal attributes

  • Experience in a regulated development environment to defined process and quality standards such as medical instrumentation or the automotive industry a distinct advantage as is the ability to deliver results using outsourcing suppliers.
  • Excellent people management, interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment of constant change and pressure working to challenging deadlines and rolling up sleeves to help wherever necessary.
  • Strong decision making and analytical/problem solving skills.
  • A strong negotiator and influencer both internally and externally.
  • Balanced skills to see and understand the big picture while managing the important details as required.
