Background

McLaren Applied has been a product business in Motorsports since it was founded in 1988. In addition to Motorsports the company has now developed product and services business in the Automotive, Public Transport and Health markets where we see significant growth potential. Our strategy is to develop a scalable product business across all markets and we have developed a Product Management framework to support this initiative.

The product business is underpinned by intellectual property, engineering capability and technology platforms in the fields of electronics, software, data science and design. This challenge is extremely broad in technology and market scope and we require very clear thinking and process to create the best technology, platform and product strategies to support rapid business growth.

Purpose of the Role:

Responsible for a range of products under a product portfolio, managing them through their complete lifecycle to deliver commercial success. Own the vision and roadmap for the portfolio of products, working closely with product managers, product marketing managers and technical leadership to align both technical and market roadmaps.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Lead the product portfolio; managing and growing the established product portfolio in its primary markets and assisting in establishing the portfolio in other markets.
  • Own the business rationale for the product portfolio, covering existing and future products over full lifecycle - concept to end of life.
  • Working closely with Sales and with Business Lines, deliver a base product that meets the needs for all or as many markets as possible.
  • Manage entire product life cycle - from strategic planning to tactical activities:
  • Working with the Business Lines, understand the market landscape and conducted market research to specify market needs for current and future products, and translate into product requirements.
  • Develop business cases to support investment requests - leading the creation of supporting material including portfolio financial forecasts, product pricing & business models.
  • Manage and own the roadmap, including prioritisation of bug-fixing and feature requests.
  • Work with Business Lines to develop product positioning, defining and supporting go-to-market plans - working collaboratively to execute.
  • Work closely with Chief Engineers to align technical roadmaps.
  • Work closely with project and technical delivery management to ensure successful product delivery to market.
  • Support the development of partner relationships.
  • Monitor, report and improve product performance, to manage the ongoing profitability of products within the portfolio.
  • Provide clear direction of product roadmaps into engineering development.
  • Own and report on key KPIs for product performance, including business cases, product P&L and ROI.
  • Work with finance to manage the product budget including the treatment of intangible assets.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Strong technical background. Preferably a degree in engineering or science discipline.
  • Extensive experience in working in product management teams in disruptive technology environments.
  • Software Product Management experience gained in a transferable sector with a proven track record working on distributed systems-based applications or data analysis products.
  • Demonstrable experience bringing software products to the market with user experience at the heart of your work.
  • Experience within the Motorsports/Automotive or related industry preferred but not essential.
  • Proven success in working directly with end-users to set software development directions and to design solutions
  • Prior experience working with software development teams and agile software development.
  • Ability to articulate vision and ideas to internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to tactfully challenge without alienating and build a strong internal network to support ability to influence.
  • Experienced Mentor/Coach.
  • Able to interpret and communicate general financial and accounting information from a product perspective and understand the financial impact of decisions.
  • Identifies and prioritises issues and takes a proactive approach to dealing with them.
  • Thinks creatively to produce workable ideas and novel solutions.
  • Takes a collaborative approach to achieving results.
