McLaren Applied has been a product led business since it was founded in 1988 to support the Motorsport industry.  The company has also been active in producing automotive products since the development of the McLaren F1 in 1993 and continues to have a strong product offering across a wide range of automotive applications. In addition Company has developed product and services business in the Public Transport and Health markets where we see significant growth potential. McLaren Applied’s strategy is to develop a scalable product business across all markets and has developed a Product Management framework to support this initiative.

The product business is underpinned by intellectual property, engineering capability and technology platforms in the fields of electronics, software, data science and design. This challenge is extremely broad in technology and market scope and we require very clear thinking and process to create the best technology, platform and product strategies to support rapid business growth.

Purpose of the Role:

Responsible for the specific product or products under electrification portfolio, specifically products relating to inverters and motors for hybrid and electric vehicles, managing them through the complete lifecycle to deliver commercial success. Own the vision and roadmap for the products, working closely with product managers, product marketing managers and technical leadership to align both technical and market roadmaps.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Take ownership of managing the inverter and motor products in their primary markets (automotive and motorsport) and assisting in establishing the portfolio in other markets.
  • Own the business rationale for the product, covering existing and future products over full lifecycle - concept to end of life.
  • Working closely with Sales and with Business Lines and the Head of Product Management, deliver a base product that meets the needs for all, or as many markets as possible.
  • Manage entire product life cycle - from strategic planning to tactical activities:
    • Working with the Business Lines, understand the market landscape around electrification, conducting market research to specify market needs for current and future products, and translate into product requirements.
    • Develop business cases to support investment requests - leading the creation of supporting material including portfolio financial forecasts, product pricing & business models.
    • Manage and own the roadmap, including prioritisation of bug-fixing and feature requests.
    • Work with Business Lines to develop product positioning, defining and supporting go-to-market plans - working collaboratively to execute.
    • Work closely with Chief Engineers to align technical roadmaps.
    • Work closely with project and technical delivery management to ensure successful product delivery to market.
    • Support the development of partner relationships.
    • Monitor, report and improve product performance, to manage the ongoing profitability of products within the portfolio.
    • Provide clear direction of product roadmaps into engineering development.
  • Own and report on key KPIs for product performance, including business cases, product P&L and ROI.
  • Work with finance to manage the product budget including the treatment of intangible assets.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Strong technical background. Preferably a degree in engineering or science discipline.
  • Experience in electrification and high voltage products used in the automotive industry.
  • Experience in working in product management teams in disruptive technology environments.
  • Ability to tactfully challenge without alienating and build a strong internal network to support ability to influence.
  • Extensive experience working in the automotive industry is preferred, with an understanding of automotive industry technical and commercial requirements.
  • Able to interpret and communicate general financial and accounting information from a product perspective and understand the financial impact of decisions.
  • Identifies and prioritises issues and takes a proactive approach to dealing with them.
  • Thinks creatively to produce workable ideas and novel solutions.
  • Takes a collaborative approach to achieving results.
