Senior Engineer – Electric Drive Test & Development

Track 25 and McLaren Automotive’ s growing reputation is testament to our world class employees. To ensure McLaren Automotive continues to be at the forefront of the Automotive market, we are looking for a Senior Engineer – Test & Development to join our Electric Drive team.

Purpose of the role:

To specify, design, execute & deliver, from concept to series-development, all Electric Drive Control (EDC) verification and validation (V&V) ensuring the delivered EDC fulfils all the programme requirements.

EDC includes areas of software/control systems content in the Electric Drive Supervisory Unit (EDSU), and other Electric Drive Components such as the DC/DC converter, Chargers and any other ECUs within the Electric Drive System.

EDC V&V also include areas such as test via simulation technologies using MIL/HIL tools closely working with EDC team and Functional Safety (ISO 26262) V&V closely working with the Vehicle Controls Department.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Support Electric Drive testing for all vehicle projects–  on time and on budget. This will include reporting V&V results to Electric Drive project leads or project engineers to deliver to programme requirements.
  • Working with Supply Chain Management to ensure V&V of the EDC on schedule for all phases of prototype, pilot, pre-production and production build.
  • Working with the Controls Department to ensure V&V of ISO 26262 requirements and platform software deliveries for all phases of the vehicle programmes.
  • Working with the Control Integration Team to develop, verify and validate electric drive architectures, EDC integration test, functional test and other support functions such as generation of the component plant model for HIL system as appropriate.
  • Preparation and presentation of material to support external and internal project status reviews
  • Provide support on EDC technical risk management to ensure project delivery, optimised vehicle performance and delivery of electric drive system attributes.
  • Guarantee EDC ownership and delivery to the specific vehicle programme requirements including:
  • Electric Drive Simulation tools – development, maintenance and verification of models and libraries
  • Electric Drive Control Test Plan through DOORs which specifies control requirement testing for the EDSU, BMS, MCU and any other EDC components.
  • EDC FMEAs, and test specifications within MiL (Model in the Loop) and/or SiL (Software in the Loop) environments
  • EDC budgets & expenditure including setting tool chain budgets
  • EDC planning, timing & delivery including design, platform release, development and validation plans
  • Vehicle build & development support
  • Delivery of EDC for all projects in line with MDP (McLaren Development Process) and that Project Management KPIs are on track           

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Technical knowledge & experience of EDC design, test & production delivery
  • Technical knowledge of EDC embedded systems such as Battery Management Systems (BMS), Motor Control Unit (MCU), Electric Drive Supervisory Unit (EDSU), Grid Charging Control/Manage, DC/DC, communication protocols, software, control architectures, diagnostics, functional safety, etc.
  • Some understanding of HV battery safety, HV safety, charging standard,  world-wide legislation and regulation on electric drive components and systems.
  • Some understanding of Control Systems, ISO 26262 standards, and Simulation modelling and techniques
  • Experience of testing with MiL, SiL,  HiL (Hardware in the Loop) and Rig systems to prove integration quality.
  • Experience of executing EDC DVPs, FMEA
  • Prepare test plan / execute tests high or low voltage electrical distribution systems within the EDC.
  • Familiar with tools from software, to rig and/or in-vehicle testing, calibrating, diagnosing, logging and data analysing.
