Senior Design Engineer - Chassis

Location: Woking, GB

Purpose of the role:

Technical, delivery and team responsibility for all design engineering work within Chassis Design Team.

Principal accountabilities:

  • With the project and attribute engineers, lead the design and development of components and systems to ensure optimised vehicle performance and delivery of vehicle attributes.
  • Manage the team of designers from both a technical and man management perspective.
  • Component and system level packaging and concept studies including styling feasibility
  • Ensure best practice and robust engineering design principals are followed.
  • Be central point of guidance and direction for all design activity within Chassis Dynamics team
  • Work from first principals and theory to ensure efficient right first time design is achieved
  • Lead the team to improve design release robustness in order to improve right first time design
  • Support team in cross functional design reviews to ensure that best solution is found for the products
  • Develop and investigate new methods, materials and processes that could be used in future chassis systems or components
  • BOM definition and management including leading cost reduction initiatives to deliver Function Group BOM glide path targets and leading weight reduction initiatives to deliver Function Group weight targets
  • Leadership, planning, monitoring and control of function group activities to guarantee project delivery in line with MDP (McLaren Development Process)
  • Ensure manufacturability and compliance with quality standards of all components and systems within the defined BOM through interface with manufacturing site and suppliers
  • Review and manage the opening and closure of design related engineering concerns
  • Weight – The Design Engineer must ensure the design is weight efficient, weight targets are surpassed and the weight is documented accurately.  This encompasses material selection and innovative design;
  • Materials – The Design Engineer should assist the Project Engineer in specifying and controlling the materials of each component to meet vehicle spec book targets, technical specifications and all legal and component DVP requirements;
  • DFM – Design for Manufacture is a fundamental requirement of the Design Engineer role. They must have a demonstrable track record of working within a Design Team in harmony with suppliers.
  • Engineering Release – Meet all defined engineering release dates. At engineering release all specifications will have been checked and met, weight and cost targets achieved, supplier DFM fully concurred, CAE output implemented, materials and finish defined, all fixings identified and positioned and all outstanding BCR’s (Build Concern Reports) are embodied and documented at the point of release

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Previous direct OEM Chassis design experience in automotive industry
  • Extensive experience of automotive design and development
  • Excellent systems design and development knowledge
  • Experience of design for various manufacturing methods, particularly forgings, castings and injection mouldings
  • Experience in component release management and problem solving.
  • Experience of high and niche vehicle (low volume) programmes
  • An ability to deliver under pressure with an appetite for measured success.
  • Ability to prioritise own and teams work load across multiple projects
  • Team management experience beneficial
  • Educated to degree level in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering
