McLaren Special Operations create cars around an owner’s precise tastes, and an extensive list of exterior options across the entire McLaren range including car specific packs and a variety of carbon fibre options.

Our customers want the best in Automotive content and to ensure we can meet their expectations we are looking for a Senior Design Engineer to deliver breath-taking and innovative components and systems for our MSO Defined range.

Purpose of the role:

As Senior Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and evolution of parts and systems for MSO Defined content. From concept, packaging, to surfacing and release you will work with a cross functional team delivering right first-time designs.

Being a Senior member of the team, you will be also act as a mentor, cascading the foundations of design principals & methodologies into a team constantly looking to develop and improve.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Delivering full component and system design solutions to required technical performance, weight, cost (BoM and Investment), quality and timing targets
  • Create and author design guides to assist in creating McLaren’s library of best practice
  • Understand and support the package constraints for the components. Working with suppliers, Concept teams & DMU to ensure components and systems meet technical and package targets and to deliver detailed designs on time to predetermined quality, cost and weight targets, within DFM requirements
  • Optimise design solutions to support vehicle assembly & service requirements
  • Collaborate with other designers and the component supplier to achieve efficient, innovative and lightweight designs
  • Ensure design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets in NVH, ergonomic, durability, visibility & performance related attributes
  • Ensure the components interface seamlessly to the wider car including structural interfaces & body panels
  • BOM definition and management to include identifying cost & weight reduction initiatives to deliver targets

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Proficient in solid modelling and surfacing using a 3D CAD system – CATIA V5 preferred
  • Experience of designing carbon fibre components highly desirable
  • Excellent feasibility assessment of design proposals, including design for manufacture and DFMEA’s
  • Confident and proficient in the art of working to pull together Styling & Surfacing to deliver robust and manufacturable designs
  • Confident in analysing and overcome technical challenges with workable and innovative engineering solutions
