Purpose of the Role:

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer Databases role is to ensure the stable operation of Group IT managed databases and their related infrastructure components. This includes database design, performance monitoring and tuning, database availability, backup and recovery, data integrity and security.


The Senior Infrastructure Engineer will be managing and configuring databases and services across a heterogeneous environment of software and hardware vendors and with a hybrid architecture of on-premise and cloud hosted solutions. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is expected to be involved in the strategy, design, planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimising of the related infrastructure component services.


The person will also mentor and act as a centre of excellence to Infrastructure analysts and assist them in resolving end user hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end user training where required. Providing outstanding customer service and a customer focused approach to outcomes is a core responsibility of this role.


Role Dimensions:

  • Close liaison with all colleagues from across Group IT and the wider businesses;
  • Works at a strategic level with project managers and architecture team influencing, designing and delivering service improvements and business change
  • Works at a strategic level with external suppliers & partners as appropriate
  • Contributes and actively influences Group and Business strategies
  • Demonstrates technical leadership in the area of database infrastructure
  • There may be requirements to work out of hours (late nights / weekends);
  • Occasionally required to respond to support requests out of hours;
  • May be required to travel to remote offices and events.


Principal Accountabilities:

  • To build, monitor, manage and repair all aspects of Group databases and other related infrastructure services, including investigation and resolution of issues escalated to 3rd line.
  • To lead on the technical response to mission critical service outages
  • Implement and maintain database security (create and maintain users and roles, assign privileges).
  • Perform database and application tuning and performance monitoring
  • Specify, enhance and develop documentation for standards conformance and best practices
  • Specify, evaluate, review, test and document new database related products
  • Conduct research on database related products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Delivery and implementation of a standard SQL database build based on MS best practise.
  • Ensure database servers are patched with the latest firmware and OS updates using tools provided ie SCCM.
  • Interact, influence and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure database related products and services.
  • Specify, develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures and associated training plans for database administration, appropriate use, and disaster recovery.
  • Take technical ownership for all databases and related services and resources managed by Group IT whether on-premise or cloud based. Provide capacity and performance management for infrastructure and work with other team members to ensure future requirements are met and planned for.
  • Ensure that all database infrastructure components are monitored using tools provided ie SCOM, Redgate’s SQLMonitor.
  • Perform server and security audits.
  • Ensure the correct policies and processes are in place so databases are backed up appropriately.
  • Recommend, schedule, and perform database upgrades and repairs.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced members of the team.



Knowledge, Skills and Experience:    

  • Degree educated in relevant subject or proven experience in a comparable DBA role with detailed knowledge of SQL server 2005 – 2016.
  • Demonstrable experience of service design, configuration and management of SQL services and related infrastructure
  • In depth experience of providing second and third line DBA support
  • Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA, MCSA) qualification or equivalent will be beneficial
  • Strong knowledge on how to implement Stored Procedures, Extended Store Procedures, Triggers and Cursors, Views, Indexes, Database Normalisation, Replication, Database performance, Availability Groups
  • Experience of data warehousing, data architecture, data quality, ETL processes, OLAP concepts, meta data concepts and project methodology an advantage
  • Experience and knowledge of Windows clustering and SQL High Availability
  • Experience with database and application performance tuning and monitoring tools
  • Demonstrate excellent trouble shooting skills.
  • Demonstrate scripting skills using T-SQL.
  • Good understanding of virtualisation, load balancing, clustering, caching processes.
  • General knowledge of storage technologies such as SAN or NAS.
  • Good understanding of fundamental IP routing & switching concepts.
  • Project management skills a definite asset.
  • Experience working within an ITIL framework.
