Senior Communications Manager - Woking

Purpose of the Role:

To plan and deliver the communications strategy for McLaren Applied in support of its Strategic Plan.

The role requires a comprehensive understanding of B2B, B2C and B2G communications in the tech and innovation environment, an ability to target and engage opinion-leading media around the McLaren Applied brand, and drive interest in its business line propositions (in motorsport automotive, public transport and health) and platform services among a relevant audience.

This senior role requires strategic thinking to create and implement a plan for this growing area of McLaren Group operating at the leading edge of innovation and technology and a very hands-on approach to deliver results.

Role Dimensions:

The role is based in Woking, and reports into the office of the McLaren Applied Chief Operating Officer, and works directly with the senior leadership team at McLaren Applied. This role has no direct reports at present.

Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Designing and delivering a robust, targeted and effective global comms strategy for McLaren Applied which directly supports the successful delivery of the business’ Strategic Plan  
  2. Executing the McLaren Applied global comms strategy supporting commercial efforts in different markets and ensuring all activity is tightly aligned with the overarching communications strategy
  3. Collaboratively build a creative content strategy that can broaden the McLaren Applied brand reach, in support of attracting and engaging new customers, partners and talent
  4. Proactively generate strategic media and speaking opportunities at tradeshows and other key industry events to elevate awareness of McLaren Applied and drive further business opportunities
  5. In alignment with the McLaren Applied Strategic business plan, directly support the business’ commercial efforts by identifying the most valuable partner/ client case studies to communicate externally 
  6. Proactively advising, advocating and guiding C-level executives and senior business line leads on media strategy and media interaction
  7. Work collaboratively and seamlessly with colleagues in the McLaren communications and content team and the broader McLaren marketing group, including digital & social media, partner activation in support of new partners that can be leveraged to drive awareness of the McLaren Applied business, brand, and strategy
  8. Provide regular and meaningful reporting to the CEO and Exec level leaders on the Comms plan, its purpose and impact, and clearly quantify the outcomes of activities undertaken

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  1. Experience in a busy communications environment within a specialist tech/ innovation/ engineering environment
  2. Proven record in delivering communications strategies and campaigns that deliver against clear KPIs  
  3. Media relations – strong network of journalist and trade contacts in technology and business media. Ability to manage media enquiries, draft media materials, identify proactive media opportunities, manage reactive responses to inbound media requests
  4. Senior personnel/stakeholder engagement – ability to collaboratively work with senior team personnel and stakeholders, across all business areas of McLaren Applied and within the McLaren Group
  5. A proactive approach to managing the candidate’s own workload, able to work well under pressure and accustomed to working to tight deadlines in a fast-paced department
  6. Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal – ability to adjust tone of voice for different audiences (internal and external) to ensure McLaren is represented consistently
