SAP Basis Lead

Purpose of the Role:

The SAP Basis Lead is responsible for: 

  • Leading the SAP Basis, SAP Security teams and co-ordinate the deliverables of those teams in alignment with corporate direction as well as in conjunction with project requirements, platform stability and segregation of duties.
  • Working closely with SAP HEC to ensure operational stability is maintained and our SAP solutions are being maintained effectively.
  • Working closely with the McLaren businesses, SAP HEC and solution partners and suppliers as required alongside the support teams. 
  • Ensuring the SAP technical architecture is fit for purpose and seeks to improve operational effectiveness where ever possible. This could be with tools like Solution Manager, Process improvements or technical infrastructure changes.
  • Being the business contact and escalation point for ‘deep dive’ technical analysis for issues that have not been solved through normal helpdesk escalation procedures.
  • Management oversight of high impact platform issues.

Role Dimensions:

  • Leading the SAP Basis and SAP Security teams.
  • Assisting in the definition of the SAP technical strategy, solutions and roadmap, ensuring it meets McLaren business requirements, performance goals in line with McLaren Group IT strategy.
  • Ensuring the SAP user security solution is optimally configured and is aligned to SoD (Segregation of Duties) methodology to protect productive.
  • Overseeing SAP Development landscape (Technologies & Processes).
  • Ensuring SAP Platform stability and driving the Solman 7.2 strategy to maximum effectiveness.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Continual review of all responsible SAP support areas, seeking opportunities to automate, & optimise activities to reduce costs, increase productivity and drive greater efficiencies.
  • Provide technical support 24x7, including being on standby and reacting in a timely manner to any problems reported with the SAP environment in alignment with company policy.
  • Support out of hours activities such as patching and be the key technical contact during exercise.
  • Ownership and governance of Upgrade & Support Pack strategy in alignment with SAP best practice and SAP HEC defined policies.
  • Compilation and implementation of documented technical support processes and procedures (System Refresh, Support Pack Patching, Release Management etc.)
  • Ensuring the following standards are followed:
    • SAP Transport / Config Processes
    • SAP Release Management Process
    • SAP Landscape diagrams
    • ITIL processes
  • Definition of SAPGUI/NWBC support and maintenance roll-out strategy in alignment with SAP best practice.
  • Escalation point for SAP Security related issues
  • Recommend SAP Security best practise for ever evolving business requirements
  • Ensuring suitable backup strategy is implemented across all incorporated systems to facilitate an appropriate recovery capability.
  • Responsible for ensuring system performance and capacity management is optimally configured.
  • Support application projects through the entire lifecycle from blueprint to go-live and BAU support.
  • Advise, guide and mentor team members as necessary.
  • Work closely with Group IT Service Desk team for problem management of any SAP system issues / outages as appropriate.
  • Collaborating with the second and third line support teams within CoE as necessary to provide prompt and efficient problem resolution. Ensuring changes introduced into the SAP landscape are understood, documented and are in line with the planned solution roadmap
  • Ensuring the McLaren SAP landscape has a suitable monitoring solution implemented and configured to provision pro-active monitoring and alerting.
  • Responsible for authoring High & Low Level SAP BASIS-related technical designs in alignment of business requirements.
  • Point of contact and oversight for our SAP platform provider – SAP HEC.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • ECC and at least one of: EP, BW, CRM, SRM
  • SAP accredited; Basis or NetWeaver discipline
  • SAP Solution Manager (7.2) including Monitoring and BPM Configuration setup
  • SAP HANA/In Memory Computing
  • At least 4 full project lifecycle experience
  • SAP system:
    • Installations and upgrades 
    • Performance tuning
    • Correction and Transport Systems
    • Patching strategies
    • HR ESS & MSS Setup 
  • Technical problem analysis and resolution
  • Single Sign On (SSO), CUA, LDAP-AD Integration etc.
  • Broad knowledge of IT & Cloud infrastructure, WAN, SAN/NAS Storage technologies, highly available systems, operating systems (Linux/Unix and WINTEL), Databases (HANA DB, Sybase ASE, MS SQL Server), Disaster Recovery etc.
  • Good understanding of the SAP Security roles and authorisations methodology

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience: 

  • SAP PI +/- additional integration methods and technologies i.e. CRM Middleware, ALE, EDI, RFC etc.
  • Data Migration techniques such as LSMW, BODS etc. 
  • Experience working within an ITIL framework

We offer a flexible working environment across our South-East sites including the world-renowned McLaren Technology Centre. Our environments are designed to encourage collaborative working across all teams. You will be amongst specialists within their field, whether it’s in design, modelling and simulation, software development, data analytics, electronics hardware, finance and marketing.

The Recruitment Process:

  • If your application is successful, you’ll be invited for a phone interview with one of our experienced technical recruiters.
  • Following successful review, you will then partake in a 30-minute telephone interview with the Hiring Manager. 
  • The final stage will be an onsite face to face interview at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey with the Hiring Manager and wider team.
