Our team

The Communication Systems Team is responsible for delivering embedded software and networking solutions that customers use for a variety of communication challenges such as connecting vehicles and motorsport telemetry systems. The key strength of the team is its ability to create high-performance solutions for a diverse range of applications ranging from transport to medical.You will be responsible for developing solutions and planning the execution path to deliver into specific systems and products. You will collaborate with teams including Hardware, Electronic Systems, Business Development and Quality.

The role

McLaren Applied Technologies is developing RF and software systems for high performance applications. As an RF Engineer, you will work within the wider Communications team to undertake the full development cycle from specification, site survey, network design and deployment while following/developing design procedures. You will configure, test and validate new RF systems for applications including motorsport, automotive and medical. You will be responsible for the reporting and analysis of RF systems and providing recommendations for further optimisations. You will design to best practices and industry standards. You will reuse sections of existing designs, customising and adapting where necessary. You will be responsible for the integration of proprietary and third party products as system components.


  • A background in RF systems engineering
  • You will have experience of RF design for both low (<1W) and high power (>100W) systems.
  • You will have knowledge of how to optimise PA design to balance RF system performance and EMC requirements.
  • You will have a practical knowledge of the latest RF technologies and standards including 3GPP and 802.11.
  • You can work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team including hardware, software, network, mechanical and systems engineers.
  • You will be able to engage with a broad range of stakeholders and work within a matrix organisation.
  • You have a First-class degree or upper 2nd in a relevant electrical/electronic engineering subject or equivalent experience.

Skills and expertise

  • Experience in software development and scripting knowledge (Python, BASH,  Perl, Javascript).
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, Ethernet and Wireless LAN operation.
  • Conversant with the GNU/Linux operating environment.
  • Test automation experience.

The recruitment process                                                                                

  • If your application is successful, you’ll be invited for a phone interview with one of our experienced technical recruiters.
  • If our recruiter believes you’re suitable for the role, you will then be invited for a phone interview with senior members from the engineering team which will last approximately 30 minutes.
  • The final stage includes a face to face interview at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey. This is usually with the Hiring Manager, and a Senior Engineer or a Team Leader. The interview will involve a series of skills based technical questions and problem solving or design challenges.
