McLaren Special Operations (MSO) is a division of McLaren Automotive, responsible for the design, development and delivery of personalised and bespoke vehicle commissions, performance details and options, as well as overseeing and ensuring McLaren legacy vehicles remain road worthy and up to date.  MSO products and services represent world class McLaren offerings.

Examples of the Programmes the MSO Engineering team delivered last year include MSO X –  10 sportscars that emulate the look and feel of a McLaren 570S GT4 race car but are fully road-legal and MSO R; A bespoke commission of 2 cars specifically created around one customers specification.

We are expanding our Engineering team to further enhance the departments capabilities. As part of this exciting growth we have an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer to join our Vehicle Engineering function. Our ambition is to be the leader in bespoke automotive content responsible for delivering breath-taking bespoke commissions and world class content onto our award winning road cars.

Purpose of the role:

As Project Engineer, you will be responsible for the evolution and lifecycle management of parts and systems across MSO bespoke vehicles and defined products.

You will provide the planning, priority and cross functional inputs that go towards the successful development, engineering and launch of MSO products.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Vehicle Engineering function group, support the design and development of the Systems to ensure optimised vehicle performance contributing to the delivery of key vehicle attributes
  • Deliver bill of materials costs, investment and weight for responsible component and system set BOM definition and management to include leading cost & weight reduction initiatives to deliver targets.
  • Manage and develop key Supplier relationships to ensure delivery to required quality & cost in line and within project timelines.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce complexity, cost and weight of components within your remit
  • Manage and deliver, Technical Specifications, DFMEA, Engineering statements of work, engineering release, concerns resolution and DVP
  • Supplier Delivery – Manage each supplier with a cross functional team of Design, SQA, Quality Engineering, Logistics, Purchasing, Dimensional Management, Manufacturing and Service personnel to ensure complete PPAP is delivered for every component to support program timing

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Strong technical project management with proven evidence of decision making
  • Previous experience working with composite component delivery ideally within an Automotive environment
  • Excellent commercial awareness to maintain a focus on cost, profit, quality and risk
  • Demonstrate experience of component & system design within an APQP or similar framework including FMEA, component planning and PPAP
  • A strong track record of delivering designs to timing, weight and cost targets
  • Supplier management, comfortable with understanding and implementing DFM requirements within the project scope
  • Catia V5 experience desirable
