Project Engineer - Body in White

Purpose of the role:
We now have an opportunity for a talented Project Engineer, specialising in Body Structures, Carbon Fibre Composites and Aluminium Alloys, to join our team based in McLaren Technology Centre in Woking. 
Despite more than 30 years of history in making carbon fibre race and sports cars, at McLaren we believe in a future aggressive rate of innovation in carbon fibre composites design and technology. We are looking for an individual that shares our vision on carbon fibre and will help us turning this vision into real, innovative and outstanding sports cars.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Reporting to the Principal Engineer, working on all aspects of Carbon Fibre Composites and Body Structures delivery on our future vehicle programmes.
  • Working on a wide range of systems and components such as crash structures, monocoques, subframes, and other vehicle structures.
  • “Cradle to Grave” approach – working within a cross functional team from R&D stage, through concept, design release, production launch and series production support to collectively deliver the whole vehicle specification targets and contribute to the overall business KPIs. 
  • Responsible to release designs that meet the following targets through coordination of internal and external design resources:
  • Cost (Piece, Tooling, D&D)
  • Performance (As specified through the full vehicle attributes and cascaded down to component level specification)
  • Timing
  • Feasibility (supporting in house manufacturing or assembly processes as well as supplied components)
  • Responsible for Problem Solving:
  • From problem avoidance at the early stages of new projects (Risk Assessments, FMEA, Lessons learnt) to practical problem solving at prototype stage and in series production.
  • Responsible for accurate reporting: 
  • Bill Of Materials management (part numbering, structuring, design change process)
  • Weight management through correct management of the BOM
  • Costs (including spend forecast, risks and opportunities)
  • Project status reporting
  • Responsible for cost engineering of carbon composites parts:
  • Rapid and accurate cost estimation to support conceptual decisions at the early stages of a project
  • Detailed estimation to assure design releases meet cost targets and to support robust purchasing decisions
  • Continuous improvement of cost estimation techniques and abilities through market intelligence, T&M studies and value analysis.
  • Responsible to deliver FE analysis at component level in support of design releases through management of in-house and external specialist resources.
  • Responsible for technical standardisation of best practices in carbon fibre composites design, engineering and technology.
  • Responsible for authoring component and systems technical specifications.
  • Support a cross-functional team including external suppliers network, quality, logistics, vehicle engineering and development, purchasing and manufacturing engineers.

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Engineering degree 2:1 or above
  • Proven experience of automotive programmes preferably in Body and low volume/high performance sports cars.
  • Knowledge of Carbon Fibre composites manufacturing technologies
  • Pre-preg and Autoclave
  • RTM (High/Low pressure, VARTM)
  • Press Moulding
  • Hand layup, press forming, braiding, filament winding
  • AFP, ATL
  • Knowledge of Composite materials destructive and non-destructive testing and FE Analysis
  • Knowledge of DFMEA and its application in automotive environment
  • Knowledge of GD&T
  • Literacy in CATIA V5 or V6, CDM or VPM and DMU tools
  • Experience in problem solving
  • Demonstrable commercial acumen
  • Experience in project management. Knowledge of PM systems (e.g. PRINCE 2) would be advantageous.
