Principal Engineer - Exterior - McLaren Special Operations

McLaren Special Operations (MSO) is a division of McLaren Automotive, responsible for the design, development and delivery of personalised and bespoke vehicle commissions, performance details and options, as well as overseeing and ensuring McLaren legacy vehicles remain road worthy and up to date.  MSO products and services represent world class McLaren offerings.

MSO Defined content is made to offer customers a range of personalisation outside of the standard factory options. With a key focus on the use of carbon fibre, MSO defined offers multiple upgrade opportunities on the 600LT, carbon fibre sill covers on our sport series cars and a wide range of different interior options.    

Our aim is to make MSO Engineering the leader in bespoke automotive content. To do this we are looking for a Principal Engineer to take ownership of MSO Defined content within our Vehicle Engineering function.

Purpose of the role:

As Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the successful delivery of MSO Defined content across all McLaren Vehicles and share our passion for innovation, performance and craftsmanship.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Be the face of MSO Defined to multiple engineering groups, ensuring best practise is adopted, whilst maintaining McLaren Automotive’s DNA is present throughout all designs.  
  • Define future component and system technical strategies and associated technologies roadmaps. Where necessary, identify research topics, associated budgets, resource, partners and funding streams
  • Respond to daily technical questions, attend meetings/reviews and react to any issues relevant to your revenue stream to best serve your customer groups such as SQA, Purchasing and Project Management team
  • Mentor junior members of the team, passing on technical detail and acting as a proxy for the Vehicle Engineering Manager when required
  • Lead engineering within a cross party team of Designers, Engineers including support roles to present feasible project schemes
  • Responsible for the release and delivery from concept to production and help with leading the team to deliver in accordance to McLaren Automotive’s development framework  
  • Achieve the piece, D+D and investment cost targets on all systems for which you are responsible

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Experience of automotive programmes preferably in Exterior and low volume/high performance sports cars
  • Educated to degree level in suitable engineering discipline
  • A good understanding of Automotive manufacture processes, feasibility and technology
  • Literacy in CATIA V5 or V6, CDM or VPM and DMU tools
  • Demonstrable commercial acumen
  • Full understanding of DFMEA and risk assessment techniques in automotive environment
