McLaren Special Operations (MSO) is a division of McLaren Automotive, responsible for the design, development and delivery of personalised and bespoke vehicle commissions, performance details and options, as well as overseeing and ensuring McLaren legacy vehicles remain road worthy and up to date.  MSO products and services represent world class McLaren offerings.

Examples of the Programmes the MSO Engineering team delivered last year include MSO X –  10 sportscars that emulate the look and feel of a McLaren 570S GT4 race car but are fully road-legal and MSO R; A bespoke commission of 2 cars specifically created around one customers specification.

We are now building the team to further enhance the departments capabilities. As part of this exciting growth we have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Engineer to join our Vehicle Engineering function .

Purpose of the role:

As Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for working on all aspects of MSO project delivery on our current and future vehicle programmes. In this role, you will be the  technical leader and expert within your revenue stream and have primary responsibility as point of contact for all enquiries into the function group

The scope of the role covers all projects from concept stage to series production. Helping to develop, lead & grow a multifaceted team to collectively deliver MSO projects to specification targets from discrete component changes up to complete bespoke commissions.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Define future component and system technical strategies and associated technologies roadmaps. Where necessary, identify research topics, associated budgets, resource, partners and funding streams
  • Lead engineering within a cross party team of Designers, Engineers including support roles to present feasible project schemes
  • Reconcile manufacturing and assembly feasibility with attribute and styling while meeting system specifications
  • Achieve required standards on Design and Engineering integrity to exceed quality, performance and commercial goals
  • Achieve the piece, D+D and investment cost targets on all systems for which you are responsible
  • Author tech specs, DFMEA and DVP as required in line with McLaren and VCA standards
  • Represent the Interior function  in design reviews and during test and development activities

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Experienced in an OEM or tier one with a high level of Interior systems technical knowledge.
  • Understanding of mechanical design requirements for typical automotive applications e.g. fastening systems, sealing solutions, manufacturing techniques.
  • Full understanding of DFMEA and risk assessment techniques in automotive environment
  • Ability to sign off full detailed design drawings in accordance with BS 8888, including geometrical tolerancing

  • An excellent communicator with the ability to lead and motivate teams and work cross functionally
  • Well organised and delivery focused – with demonstrable track record of on-time delivery in a high pressure environment
  • A confident, engaging communicator able to influence and lead high level meetings
  • Capable of representing a world class automotive brand with a personal passion to be seen in a world class delivery team
