Principal Engineer, Electric Drive Control

Location: Woking, GB

To specify, design, engineer & deliver, from concept to series-development, all Electric Drive Control (EDC) ensuring they fulfil all the programme requirements (cost, timing, performance / function / attributes). EDC includes areas of software/control systems content in the Electric Drive Supervisory Unit (EDSU), the Motor Control Units (MCUs), Battery Management Systems (BMS) and other Electric Drive Components such as the DC/DC converter, Chargers and any other ECUs within the Electric Drive System. EDC also includes critical areas such as design via simulation using CAE tools closely working with Powertrain CAE team and Functional Safety (ISO 26262) closely working with the Vehicle Controls Department.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Detailed EDC knowledge and experience  – includes detailed technology/EDC roadmaps, advanced engineering, attribute delivery/support, managing design releases, specifications, DVPs, DFMEAs, BCR (QCRs)
  • EDC ownership and delivery
  • EDC assembly planning and allocation
  • EDC simulation (where required)
  • EDC Supplier management
  • EDC Calibration release
  • EDC legislation and regulation compliance.
  • Design-focussed vehicle level meetings for EDC integration working with the Electric Drive Systems

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Guarantee EDC delivery to all vehicle projects– to specification, on time and on budget. This will include leading EDC project leads or project engineers to deliver to programme requirements.
  • Influencing future EDC strategy and supporting Head of Electric Drive Technology in technology roadmaps and attributes.
  • Support definition & execution of EDC technology, and support of supply chain, roadmaps for the next 10 years
  • Establish links with external organisations such as universities, research organisations, etc. on collaborative research projects that will help McLaren deliver innovation in EDC technologies where appropriate. This would include research projects with universities or other like minded organisations collaborating with the Engineering Manager of EDC and Head of Electric Drive Technology to exploit such opportunities.
  • Working within, and influencing, the Vehicle Programme & Engineering Management teams to guarantee that the Electric Drive Technology department responsibilities collectively deliver the whole vehicle specification targets.
  • Working with Supply Chain Management to ensure delivery of the EDC on schedule for all phases of prototype, pilot, pre-production and production build.
  • Working with the Controls Department to ensure delivery of ISO 26262 requirements and platform software deliveries for all phases of the vehicle programmes.
  • Working with the Powertrain CAE group to develop, verify and validate electric drive architectures, component duty cycles and other support functions such as generation of the component reference duty cycle (RDC) as appropriate.
  • Preparation and presentation of material to support external and internal project status reviews
  • Recruitment and development of EDC Engineering team to be a high performance team capable of delivering McLaren’s Electric Drive programmes
  • Provide support on EDC technical risk management to ensure project delivery, optimised vehicle performance and delivery of electric drive system attributes.
  • Guarantee EDC ownership and delivery to the specific vehicle programme requirements including:
    • Electric Drive Simulation tools – development, maintenance and verification of models and libraries
    • ISO 26262 coordination within the EDC components
    • Electric Drive Control Specification through DOORs which specifies control requirements for the HSU, BMS, MCU and any other EDC components.
    • EDC FMEAs, and test specifications within MiL (Model in the Loop) and/or SiL (Software in the Loop) environments
    • EDC budgets & expenditure including setting tool chain budgets
    • EDC planning, timing & delivery including design, platform release, development and validation plans
    • Robust concerns resolution
    • Vehicle build & development support
    • Delivery of EDC for all projects in line with MDP (McLaren Development Process) and that Project Management KPIs are on track            


Knowledge, skills and experience

  • A high level of technical knowledge & experience of EDC design, test & production delivery
  • Design / implementation of EDC embedded systems such as Battery Management Systems (BMS), Motor Control Unit (MCU), Electric Drive Supervisory Unit (HSU), Grid Charging Control/Manage, DC/DC, communication protocols, software, control architectures, diagnostics, functional safety, etc.
  • Detailed understanding of HV battery safety, HV safety, charging standard,  world-wide legislation and regulation on electric drive components and systems.
  • Detailed understanding of Control Systems, ISO 26262 standards, and Simulation modelling and techniques
  • In-depth experience of testing with MiL, SiL,  HiL (Hardware in the Loop) and Rig systems to prove integration quality.
  • Experience of executing EDC DVPs, FMEA
  • Design / implementation experience of vehicle embedded systems, notably:
    • System requirements capture (using tools such as DOORs, etc.)
    • Software design to MISRA guidelines (C or equivalent)
    • Communication protocols (CAN, LIN etc.)
    • Autocoding knowledge from Model-Based designs
    • Diagnostics implementation and validation
    • Software architecture, ideally including use of the VECTOR tool chain.
    • Vehicle data logging, calibration and data analysis using INCA, Vector CANAPE or similar.
    • Vehicle powertrain and/or power-electrical simulations, particularly driveline, emissions and performance-analysis simulations (ideally in Matlab / Simulink)
  • Design / implementation high or low voltage electrical distribution systems within the EDC.
  • Familar with tools from software, to rig and/or in-vehicle testing, calibrating, diagnosing, logging and data analysing.
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.                                                                                                                                       
  • Experienced in OEM or tier one EDC delivery


Qualifications and Training

  • Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above
