Design is synonymous within the culture at McLaren automotive, for us design is emotive and part of our language. The design engineering team ensure the heritage and denotation of McLaren is part of the DNA within every vehicle that we design and produce.

Our business is growing and evolving as a direct result of our capability to produce increasing volumes of award-winning vehicles and continuous profitability. We are now looking to scale the design engineering team to align them with the numerous projects in development.


The team is looking to grow from 16 to 22 overall, as part of this growing team, you will contribute to our success in producing world-class designs to future vehicle projects through to the year 2022, in line with our track22 business plan.


As a Principal Design Engineer, you will work in support of the Design Engineering Leader, you should be comfortable with producing innovative designs, working with advanced technologies. You will need a willingness to challenge the impossible, as you will be responsible for leading design engineering activities to  defined technology areas and systems on new vehicles.

As part of the design engineering team, you will have the opportunity to directly influence and design vehicle platform layout that will encompass body – interior, exterior, hybrid, packaging, and ergonomics.


This can be a challenge in this role, due to the number of customers including the design studio and the various function groups who support design activities but all have different demands. It will be your job to find a median ground for all without compromise to the performance of the product and meeting vehicle attributes.


A real sense of achievement and pride can be found with witnessing the first prototype being built. In addition to receiving positive feedback from manufacturing engineering on the quality and build ease. Further praise is often given from product development and executive Directors on vehicle performance in development stages and drive events. Resounding assurance, you’re doing a fantastic job.


With clear paths and structure of progression in the team, this role would be an ideal fit for a Senior Design Engineer looking to progress in their career. Alternatively, this would also be well suited to a Principal Engineer looking for a new challenge and more influence over the end product. To be successful in this position you should have exceptional design experience using Catia V5 and experienced within packaging. Additionally, you should be experienced with vehicle layout on different vehicle zones. Your experience within body design should be evident, either working on interiors, exteriors or structures. You may have also had experience with HMI and ergonomics.
