With a backdrop of continued growth and success, McLaren Automotive is now consolidating its motorsport strategy with ambitious targets. To make these targets a reality we are now looking for a Powertrain Design Engineer to join our rapidly expanding Engineering department and deliver championship winning cars across the globe.

Purpose of the role:

As Powertrain Design Engineer you will be responsible for Concept Design, packaging studies, detailed design & release of Engine related parts on Motorsport Programs, from concept to production ensuring the design supports Motorsport programs requirements and system technical specifications.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Design systems on a Motorsport Powertrain architecture and installation, progressing concepts through to executing detailed designs for prototype and final release and manufacture
  • Understands and supports the package constraints for the components.  Designing in context of the vehicle package to ensure a robust whole vehicle solution
  • Build relationships with suppliers and Vehicle Teams to ensure components and systems meet technical and package targets and to deliver detailed designs on time to predetermined quality and weight targets
  • Ensures design solutions are optimised to support vehicle assembly
  • Work with the wider Motorsport Engineering team to develop component and system specifications.
  • Works alongside other teams to deliver systems that durability and performance related attributes.
  • Ensures the components interface seamlessly to the wider car
  • Preparation and presentation of material to support external and internal project status reviews
  • Review and manage the opening and closure of design concerns

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Detailed knowledge of materials & manufacturing processes employed in Motorsport Designs
  • Extensive experience in automotive design and development experience, preferably in Motorsport activities
  • Proven track record of relevant Powertrain component & system design
  • Excellent CATIA V5 2D/3D skills          
  • Mechanical or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above, or equivalent qualification.
  • Adopts a creative & thoughtful approach to concept design and solving engineering problems with good attention to detail
  • Flexible approach to work hours and a ‘can do’ attitude round the profile of the candidate
