Perceived Quality Attribute Expert

Location: Woking, GB

When our founder Bruce McLaren passed away at the age of 32 he left behind a legacy that has shaped who we are today. We have an unrivalled heritage which has its roots in racing; but McLaren Automotive is now creating a story of its own and we want you to be a part of it.
As part of our Track25 business plan we will launch 18 new models or derivatives of our vehicles and look to expand our retailer network into new markets with an aim of having 100 retailers globally.
Track 25 and McLaren Automotive’ s growing reputation is testament to our world class employees. To ensure McLaren Automotive continues to be at the forefront of the Automotive market, we are looking for a Perceived Quality Attribute Expert to join our Design Execution team.
Purpose of the role:
The Perceived Quality Expert is responsible for creating targets, specifications and designs of components to achieve certain sensory attribute targets on a number of future vehicle projects. These sensory attributes are a collection of subjective and objective factors which have an influence on the customer’s perception of the overall Perceived Quality of the vehicle, with respect to its intended purpose and benchmark competitors. The Perceived Quality Expert reports to the Head of Design Execution, who is part of the Engineering department. This individual will not receive direct supervision, and will be expected to manage their own tasks and workload. The Perceived Quality Expert will be assigned full responsibility for up to two vehicle programmes, on engineering components across the whole vehicle.
Principal accountabilities:

  • Create product requirements of vehicle performance in regard of Perceived Quality perceptions. These are expressed in subjective scores and objective performance targets.
  • Create these product requirements from information gleaned from consumer feedback, from benchmarking competitor vehicles, and from own aesthetic and engineering judgement.
  • Constantly persuade programme management, and people from across the business, of the importance of executing the solutions which achieve these targets. Presentation exposure will be all the way up to CEO level in some instances.
  • Write engineering specifications for the material and geometry design of vehicle componentry, with an aim to achieve Perceived Quality sensory targets.
  • As this is a 'subjective' attribute, there is no right or wrong answer and a high-level of aesthetic judgement is required.
  • Visualise these engineering designs through specialised visualisation software, and through 'hard models'.
  • Create Perceived Quality testing and assessment schedule for engineering prototype and production components.
  • Carry out testing and assessment of physical components for requirements set out in the Perceived Quality attribute.
  • Write Engineering Sign-off Report for Perceived Quality attribute, and submit to Engineering Director for approval.
  • Raise any concerns using the company QCR process. Own these concerns and find a resolution to them.
  • Author written processes for any new Perceived Quality activities.
  • Co-ordinate lessons-learned activities at the successful completion of each engineering sign-off milestone.
  • The Perceived Quality Expert is wholly accountable that the engineering component designs achieve the targets approved at the start of the programme.

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Is degree qualified in a relevant Engineering discipline, or in Consumer Science, or Product Design, with a high level of achievement. This role requires in-depth specialist knowledge of one of these fields.
  • Awards received during study or work will be influential.
  • Should be able to demonstrate design (aesthetic) empathy through work experience or personal projects.
  • Knowledge of CATIA CAD software or Alias/ICEMSurf CAS software is not necessary, but would be a benefit.
  • A good level of English (equivalent to C1 or better) is required.

Personal attributes:

  • Intelligence: Analytical intelligence, speed and sharpness, ability to think on feet, creative thought.
  • Impression: Presentation, self-confidence, and affability.
  • Approach: Motivation, bravery, drive, positivity.
  • Nature: Curiosity, resilience, integrity.
  • Clarity: Clear thought, organised mind.
