Passive Safety Test Engineer

Purpose of the Role:

  • To plan and execute testing programmes relating to Passive Safety systems of future McLaren vehicles.
  • Reporting to the Principal Body/Passive Safety Development Engineer, the Passive Safety Test Engineer will be based at the McLaren Technology Centre and should expect to travel frequently in the UK and overseas.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Own a passive safety testing programme up to vehicle project level
  • Organise and execute passive safety tests in accordance with the Vehicle Development Plan, to include but not limited to:
  • full vehicle crash testing
  • sub-system testing (eg sleds and restraints)
  • component tests (eg airbags)
  • Assist the Vehicle Validation Co-Ordinator by providing information for the maintenance of the Vehicle Development Plan
  • Analyse test data for adherence to target, and advise on any departure from expected performance.
  • Raise engineering issue documentation (QNs) if concerns are found during the course of this activity
  • Writing/collation and filing of test reports, and reporting results to project level management
  • Liaise with suppliers of external testing resource over planning and execution of testing
  • Provide updates and information to the relevant project Senior Development Engineer to ensure that the McLaren Development Process (MDP) is followed and correctly documented.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to understand and develop their test requirements and specifications in the early phases of vehicle programmes.
  • Maintenance and creation of Passive Safety Test Specification documentation (MSL)
  • Plan equipment/hardware or outsourcing requirements to support upcoming tests, adhering to programme budgets.
  • Plan and manage parts ordering and consumption, liaising with the logistics department to ensure parts are available for testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience: 

  • A 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in Automotive or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 2-5 years experience in the automotive industry is preferred, particularly in the following areas:
    • low volume, high performance vehicle programmes
    • delivery of whole vehicle development programmes, from preliminary testing through to vehicle homologation
  • Must have a broad background in automotive safety testing (full vehicle, sleds, subsystem and component) to support safety and homologation requirements.
  • Familiar with FMVSS/ECE/GCC/NCAP/IIHS and other worldwide regulations and industry standard test procedures.
  • Experience of Design (Catia V5) would be an advantage
  • Experience of the following software is desirable: MONACO, Vector CAN tools.
  • Be able to apply detailed technical knowledge to the understanding of new technologies, development of engineering designs and resolution of engineering problems
  • Must be proficient with all common Microsoft Office applications including Project
  • Excellent communication skills required, both verbal and written

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to operate within a team environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally
