Location: Woking, GB

Purpose of the role:

Translate 2D themes into breath-taking physical properties “that tell the visual story of their function”.
Create concept & production ready surface solutions compatible with concurrent engineering exercises to the McLaren Design Process (MDP) & program timing.
Drive the program forwards delivering design intent whilst fulfilling the business’ requirements.


Principal accountabilities:

Lead the exterior or interior clay team to deliver the design vision/strategy
Plan workloads as required. Manpower and timing of projects with Design Operations Manager
Produce high impact physical content for senior presentations and weekly design reviews
Work within the wider CMD, CAS, Clay & Engineering teams; to present feasible design solutions to Function Group representatives and Senior Management for sign-off
Reconcile design intent, quality & manufacturing feasibility with aerodynamics, engineering and commercial requirements
Communicate progress and critical issues to the Clay Manager
Attend Design & CAS reviews as required and action next steps
Ability to support studio technician with cutter paths
Offer input into the creation and update of design standards & process
Maintain a tidy work space
Allocate secondary tasks to team members, such as preparing review content.
May be required to conduct performance reviews
Be a role model, live the values and communicate the design pillars to other departments

Knowledge, skills & experience:

Education in a design, modelling or pattern making background preferred  
Good verbal & written presentation skills
Strong physical modelling and surface design skills (hard modelling and clay)
Good knowledge of Work NC (milling, cutter paths)
PC literate. Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Experience on full size and scale clay properties. Led an exterior or interior G0-G4
Good understanding of ergonomics, aerodynamic principles & legal requirements
