New Model Logistics Operations Manager

Purpose of the role:

This is an excellent opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping the future Logistics solution for McLaren’s New Model and Ultimate Series Production. Reporting directly to the Senior Manager New Model Material Control and Logistics Operations the role encompasses the entire operational logistics requirements within the New Model vehicle build phases and the supply chain for the Ultimate series production line.


You will be managing the materials flow for the New Model and Ultimate Production Lines which will be achieved by liaising with Material Planning, Series Logistics Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Logistics Engineering, Supplier/Quality Assurance, Engineering and many other areas of the business with the sole purpose of ensuring on time and full delivery of parts to Production Lineside to achieve the project / production volume. You will be doing this whilst ensuring the departments budgetary management remains on target and reporting daily against all operational KPI’s.

The aim is to develop capable processes and a high performing Logistic Operations team to deliver the correct material at the correct time at optimal cost, using most efficient and effective logistic solutions whilst ensuring the correct stock levels to enable the operational team to pick material for Point of Fit employing exceptional line delivery methods and storage methodologies.

Your leadership skills, drive and logistic operations experience will be paramount to the success of this role. Bringing your knowledge and experience will enable the team to continuously grow and develop and will be a major part of this role. Best practice and fluidity are key skills that will enable the successful candidate to achieve the highest standard set by McLaren.


Principal accountabilities:

  • Operations performance and Inventory Risk Reporting – Working with the material control team to deliver accurate and regular reports/forecasts to provide maximum transparency of availability of all materials and to drive appropriate performance with clear communication throughout with the cross functional Logistics and Operations teams. The objective being material availability at Point of Fit.
  • Material Availability – Reporting all material demand and status, paying particular attention to the maturation level of materials and ensuring the material is correctly processed in SAP and flows through the business with clear visibility and traceability of materials. Proactively sense checking all data to identify any trends in rework or delays in delivering materials to build plan.
  • Material Control & Schedule Planning – Ensuring material planning and material control have the latest information regarding any stock discrepancies for all suppliers and materials within New Model & Ultimate line, ensuring the right parts are available at the right time to support production. Key areas of focus will be New Model introduction ramp up, obsolescence and engineering change.
  • Logistics Solution and Inventory control strategy – Support the definition of the strategy and manage the end to end commercial costs, stock accuracy targets and working capital in line with McLaren Automotive business objectives.
  • Leadership – To train, lead and motivate the New Model Logistics Operational Team and working with the Material Control managers ensuring that suppliers remain highly invested and focussed on delivery of stable New Model Build Phases and KPI target achievement.
  • Direct Reports – One New Model Operations Group Leader and indirect reports of three Team Leaders and 30+ operatives.
  • Supplier performance and Inventory Risk Reporting - Deliver accurate and regular reports on OTIF to provide maximum transparency for all stakeholders and to drive appropriate performance with clear communication throughout.
  • Business Integration - Interaction with key stakeholders within the wider business to ensure that Logistics plans are fully integrated and supported. Being proactive in planning and adhering to all New Model requirements working with Series Logistics Operations ensuring their processes are adhered to whilst New Model material and functions are not hindered. Identifying operational build requirements and therefore working closely with manufacturing/Logistics Engineering.
  • Issue Management - Point of escalation and leading the resolution of commercial, timing & delivery constraints and delivery issues, past point of fit, inhouse delivery methods to line etc. All instances to be reviewed and rectification measures to be applied to prevent re-occurrence.
  • Systems Management – Ensure that the New Model operational team are fully trained and the systems offer the most efficient solution for picking, stock accuracy and are scalable for future business growth including the New Model tracker.
  • Logistics Service Provider Management & Engagement – Working closely with the Series Logistics Manager to ensure that suppliers are actively managed and monitored and fully understand Logistics requirements for the short, medium and long-term horizons. Regularly interact with current and potential Suppliers to understand market challenges, opportunities and to assess current performance vs. target. Drive requirement for business improvement plans where required.
  • Continuous Improvement – Review performance on a frequent basis, identifying and proposing clear recommendations for improvements in the team efficiency and effectiveness with KPI’s to drive the department forward, using Lean, PDCA’s, 5’s & 7 Wastes, Man, Method, Material & Machine practices. Working with the Group Leader ensuring regular reviews with all team members are within MAL company policies.
  • Financial Management – Review complex numerical data, identify key trends, and develop clearly structured long-term projections for future parts growth whilst operating within budget.
  • Customer Interface – Lead engagement with customer (Production Leadership team) to assess risks and develop containments, recovery plans and mitigate impact on production volume.
  • Health & Safety – All staff, environment and processes are in line with MAL Health and Safety Policies and all guide lines are adhered to.


Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Automotive and Manufacturing experience preferred
  • Strong leadership, negotiation and stakeholder management skills
  • Extensive logistic operations - warehouse, inventory control, LLP parts supply - experience
  • Proven ability to act under pressure with calmness, clarity of thought and decisive authority
  • Proven ability to manage all aspects of complex operations/production lines from end to end
  • Experience in analysing, interpreting and reporting data
  • Proven communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Highly IT and systems literate (preferred SAP)
