Design Engineer - Battery Systems

STRATEGY

Delivering future vision, service concepts, product/service system strategies, business concept design, user experiences based on strategic research and design thinking approach, anticipating changing user and market needs.

 

DESIGN

Balances technical, user and commercial constraints to deliver products, services, strategies, interfaces, data visualisation, technology applications, manufacturing processes and communicates the brand, the vision and the values to drive through new ideas.

 

ENGINEERING

Delivers tangible output that meets all performance, quality and cost requirements, using world-leading cutting-edge engineering tools, analysis techniques and processes from concept creation to functional prototype and design for manufacture.

 

 

 

The Role:

  •  Lead Mechanical Engineer in a newly formed, multi-disciplinary, battery electrification project group.
  • Dedicated role, focussing on delivering innovative breakthroughs in battery packaging, thermal, and structural performance through the application of advanced technology, design and mechanical engineering.
  • Forms a new and exciting addition to the Design Group’s Engineering capabilities, with full access to the tools and resources of the team.
  • Line management reporting to the Aerothermal Team Leader of the Design Group’s Engineering function.
  • Project reporting to the Battery Electrification Group Leader.
  • Some domestic or international travel may be required from time to time. Standard working hours, 40-hour week, Monday to Friday, but flexibility to work additional hours if required.

 

Responsiblities:

  • Ideation and concept creation of novel cell packaging and battery integration designs, pushing the boundaries of existing technology and know-how.
  • Detailed mechanical designs and packaging schemes of battery power modules for a wide range of applications, including motorsport, automotive and medical.
  • Thermal management design for battery configuration and packaging concepts, using CFD thermal analysis software tools.
  •  Structural analysis assessment of battery packages deployed in harsh operating environmental conditions.
  • Design calculations relating to high power and high energy battery electrification schemes, including creepage and clearances.
  • Creation of detailed part, assembly designs and drawings using 3D CAD modelling tools.
  •  Requirements gathering, documentation, and interpretation into design specifications.
  • Client-facing, often being the main point of contact for engineering development. 
  • Organise and provide input into concept brainstorms, design reviews and other peer review sessions.
  •  Work closely with multi-disciplinary engineering groups across the business.
  • Support project planning, budget estimates and pre-sales activities for new client engagements.
  • Produce project proposals, technical specifications, and other design and engineering documentation.
  • Provide input into team strategy discussions, taking a shared ownership of the team’s growth and capability development.

 

Skills and Experience:  

  • BEng Mechanical Engineering degree, or equivalent technical degree.
  •  Previous experience of cell and battery packaging design for high performance applications.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD modelling, ideally using Siemens NX.
  • In-depth knowledge of battery thermal cooling techniques and analysis, ideally using Mentor Graphics FloEFD.
  • In-depth knowledge of structural finite element analysis pertinent to the design of battery packages in harsh vibration and impact shock environments, ideally using Altair Hyperworks Suite.
  • Familiar with BS8888:2011, or equivalent, for the generation and checking of engineering drawings.
  •  Appreciation of brand value and working to high design standards.
  • Experience of working with global brands, their design teams and being the client’s technical point of contact.
  • Proven responsibility across the entire design lifecycle from initial project scoping with external clients through to volume manufacture and production support.
  • Writing design documentation to a high standard, with the ability to deliver impactful presentations with confidence to internal and external clients.
  • Multi-tasking and adapting to changing project requirements.
  •  Adept at researching, understanding and implementing technical solution methods when beyond current skill set.

We are based in the world-renowned McLaren Technology Centre and in London. Our Woking campus includes a subsidised restaurant, a café, a gym with a pool, break-out spaces and more. Our Design Lab within the Technology Centre allows us to explore, collaborate, form and incubate breakthrough ideas and it fosters our own unique culture of innovation.

  •  If our recruiter believes you’re suitable for the role, you will be invited to the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking to meet key members of the team and discuss your CV and professional experience.
  •  If successful, you will be asked to complete an engineering-related design challenge in your own time, around 1-week before we next meet.
  • For our final meeting, you’ll be invited back to the McLaren Technology Centre to share your thinking on the engineering challenge, and for a more in-depth discussion with further members of the Engineering team.
