McLaren Special Operations create cars around an owner’s precise tastes, and provide everything from bespoke customisation options through to building ultra-exclusive limited-edition or one-off breath-taking models.

Following the launch of the 720S at Geneva, MSO displayed "Velocity" to give customers a taste of the levels of customisation available to them through MSO on our latest Supercar. To help us achieve our mission, we have a fantastic opportunity to join our Engineering team as a Senior Design Engineer within our Outer Body function.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Reporting to the MSO Outer Body Function Group Manager, working on all aspects of MSO project delivery on our current and future vehicle programmes
  • Complete packaging and concept studies including styling feasibility
  • Responsibility for a diverse selection of components such as BIW, body exterior and body panels and closures
  • Working within a cross functional team to collectively deliver MSO projects to specification targets from discrete panel changes up to complete bespoke vehicles
  • Packaging and detailing from prototype to production, including test car applications
  • Work within a cross party team of Designers, Engineers and other support roles to present feasible project schemes to MSO management and sales team
  • Reconcile manufacturing and assembly feasibility with aerodynamics, styling and component or system specifications
  • Stand-alone mechanical system design projects to fulfil specific MSO engineering or commercial requirements
  • Identify opportunities to reduce complexity, cost and weight
  • Represent the project in design reviews and during test and development activities
  • Check the content of designs for release against the specification, the data integrity of CAD geometry and resolution of digital build concerns prior to sign-off
  • Liaise with other engineers, designers, suppliers and workshop technicians
  • Communicate progress and critical issues to the MSO Outer Body Function Group Manager

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Highly skilled in modelling and surfacing using CATIA V5
  • Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Degree preferred
  • Relevant Automotive experience of high-end or niche vehicles preferred.
  • Ability to support design decisions with appropriate hand calculations
  • Ability to create full detailed design drawings in accordance with BS 8888, including geometrical tolerancing
  • Great attention to detail and proven track record of producing ‘right first time’ quality work
  • Good understanding of mechanical design requirements for typical automotive applications e.g. fastening systems, sealing solutions, manufacturing techniques.
  • Good understanding of DFMEA and risk assessment techniques in automotive environment
  • Excellent systems design and development knowledge
  • Desirable to have experience of VPM and DMU tools
