Our Team

The Design Group collaborates with all Applied Technologies’ Business Units and the wider McLaren Group to create cutting edge, commercially viable products, services and digital assets. We create and develop for our world-class partner companies and our own go-to-market solutions.  Our teams work together in three key functions to achieve our goals


Delivering future vision, service concepts, product/service system strategies, business concept design, user experiences based on strategic research and design thinking approach, anticipating changing user and market needs.


Balances technical, user and commercial constraints to deliver products, services, strategies, interfaces, data visualisation, technology applications, manufacturing processes and communicates the brand, the vision and the values to drive through new ideas.

Mechanical Engineering

Delivers tangible output that meets all performance, quality and cost requirements, using world-leading cutting edge engineering tools, analysis techniques and processes from concept creation to design for manufacture.

The Role

You are a Design leader, thinker and doer. You will take the lead on design across a variety of projects, working collaboratively with technical experts to deliver holistic products and services, recognising that design is pivotal in connecting key capabilities around the user and the user experience to deliver feasible and desirable solutions.

Design work will span and be at the forefront of a variety of sectors including consumer products, health, public transport, automotive and motorsport. Solid experience in at least one of these sectors of conceptualising, designing and developing products through to commercialisation is an essential requirement.

Experience and/or qualification in other domains outside of traditional Product Design, but complimentary to the aforementioned sectors, is of high interest as fresh thinking adds a new dimension to the business.


  • Demonstrable experience of conceptualising, designing and developing products through to commercialisation in at least one of the following sectors; consumer products, health, public transport, automotive or motorsport, is an essential requirement.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading and managing mixed teams of creative technical experts. Able to provide guidance on personal development and strategic direction on an individual and at a wider Design function level.
  • Solid experience of using data to inform design philosophies and drive design solutions.
  • Experience and/or qualification in other domains outside of traditional product design, but complimentary to the aforementioned sectors, is of high interest as fresh thinking adds a new dimension to the business.
  • BSc Industrial Design, BEng Product Design, equivalent creative-technical degree or equivalent industry experience

Skills and Expertise

  • Able to demonstrate a high level of creativity and innovation, ideally captured in a personal design portfolio.
  • Strong technical capability, with the ability to understand and translate complex technical challenges and requirements provided by specialists into elegant solutions.
  • A broad skillset in the design spectrum, but with expertise in at least one complementary area.
  • Design experience across all stages of a product’s design lifecycle, from initial project scoping through to prototyping and development ready for manufacture.
  • Appreciation of colour, material and finish (CMF) for design performance.
  • Understanding of human needs and able to translate behavioural insight into commercial opportunities.
  • Ability to clearly communicate design intent to engineering colleagues and client design teams, maintaining ownership of the design throughout.
  • Expert at sketching and visualising ideas for all levels of communication.
  • Proficient at translating sketched design concepts into 3D CAD models, using both solid and surface modelling techniques, ideally using SolidWorks, Rhino or Alias.
  • Proficiency with the Adobe suite of applications primarily Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Fluency in complex surface modelling techniques and algorithmic modelling experience is an advantage.
  • Experience of working with global brands, their design teams and acting as the client’s point of contact for design.
  • Appreciation of brand value and working to high design standards.

The Work Environment

We are based in the world-renowned McLaren Technology Centre and in London. Our Woking campus includes a subsidised restaurant, a café, a gym with a pool, break-out spaces and more. Our Design Lab within the Technology Centre allows us to explore, collaborate, form and incubate breakthrough ideas and it fosters our own unique culture of innovation.

  • If our recruiter believes you’re suitable for the role, you will be invited to meet key members of the team in an informal setting to talk though your CV and portfolio.
  • For the next step, you may be asked to complete a design-related challenge in your own time.
  • You will then be invited to the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking to share your thinking on the design challenge and for a face-to-face interview with other members of the Design Group.
