Hybrid Systems Test Engineer

Purpose of the Role:

The Systems Engineering Test Team is responsible for the specification, design, integration, upgrades and maintenance of all systems test equipment.

The team is involved in almost every project within McLaren Applied, across many markets. Most recently the they have worked on autonomous vehicles, instrumented sports equipment, hybrid drive for motorsport, automotive control systems for multiple motorsport series and opportunities for track support.

Undertakes specification, design, integration, upgrades and maintenance of systems test facilities (primarily dynos) at an appropriate cadence and schedule. Advises on the Systems Test equipment availability, suitability and capacity to contribute to planning of integration, validation and verification activities on programmes. Able to undertake Systems Test activities if required to support portfolios in case of surge requirements.

Accountable to the engineering manager of the portfolios supported, contributes to the planning for test activities as well as maintenance and upgrades of test equipment.

Undertaking these activities according to best practice in terms of configuration management, test definition and processes.

Role Dimensions:

Some travel and out of hours working depending on the business commitments. 

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Liaising with portfolio teams to understand system test activities required and advise on current capabilities/gaps.
  • Review of test system requirements to advise on coverage.
  • Responsible for the specification, design, integration, maintenance, upgrade, safety systems, instrumentation of all in-house current and proposed systems test equipment.
  • Train others on systems test equipment and creation and maintenance of facility guides/documentation including operational processes and procedures.
  • Conducts all activities in accordance with plan, appropriate processes and safe working practices.
  • Support to teams in case of issues encountered with equipment including investigation of faults supporting root cause analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Potentially working concurrently on provision of systems test equipment design and development to several projects across the company portfolios.
  • Ability to operate system test equipment to provide support for surge support to portfolios, commissioning, fault finding etc.


  • First class degree or upper 2nd in Engineering, Electronics, Mathematics, Operational Research, Computer Science, or other highly quantitative field (or equivalent experience).
  • Chartership with relevant professional body (IET, IMechE etc) desirable. 

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:


    • A proven background in high pressured, time critical roles.
    • Integration and testing of complex multidisciplinary systems working with hardware, embedded software, application software and mechanical components.
    • Strong practical knowledge of mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies, telemetry acquisition, electronic and electrical systems.
    • Ability to read, amend, and interoperate technical drawings and wiring schedules
    • A strong background in operation, upgrades and maintenance of automotive and/or motorsport systems test equipment.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent technical knowledge. Able to quickly build a rapport with peers and stakeholders. Able to tactfully challenge without alienating.
    • Strong analytical and numerical skills.


    • Experience with analysis tools e.g. Atlas, MotorCAD, Matlab and Simulink.
    • A background in specification and commissioning of systems test equipment e.g. dynos.
    • High voltage systems experience.
