The Function

Our Mechanical Engineering teams deliver feasible, data-led solutions and have the capability to provide input across all McLaren Applied engineering programmes. Our multi-disciplinary teams adopt an open and inquisitive mindset, eager to explore and solve engineering challenges. We apply world-leading cutting-edge engineering tools, techniques and processes ranging from novel insight generation techniques, concept creation, detailed design and verification through to product delivery.

Our teams’ value is realised through a number of key strengths, including mechanical simulation-driven optimisation; advanced 3D modelling and visualisation; high-performance materials expertise; prototyping and performance validation testing; and design excellence for production.


The Role         

This newly created role follows a recent reorganisation and has been implemented as part of our business strategy and desire to maintain our status as a world-leading technology business.

The primary objectives are to lead and manage the Mechanical Engineering functional area of the business with a focus on vision, execution of strategy, career management and accountability for function performance and delivery.

An outline of expectations within the first year is as follows:

  • Within the first 3 months, become acquainted with the range of mechanical engineering activities across the business and the dynamics of the teams delivering these.
  • Within 6 months, create an initial plan to consolidate and strengthen our teams and form the Mechanical Engineering function.
  • By the end of the first year, execute the plan to establish a performant function with a clear strategic roadmap.


From the outset, the role forms part of McLaren Applied’s Engineering Leadership Team, and reports to the Engineering Director.

Role Accountabilities

People leadership

  • Inspire and set the vision for the function, instilling a sense of excitement and positivity in everything we do.
  • Nurture an environment where the function can thrive, individuals can flourish and be the best at what they do.
  • Take responsibility and invest time in the development of the careers of the function members and ensure that individuals across the function can develop skills and achieve their aspirations.
  • Encourage and empower the function to achieve strategically aligned objectives, providing support whenever necessary.
  • Ensure the function has the critical skills in place with optimal utilisation of team members, making use of recruitment and development tools when needed.
  • Lead resource planning for all areas within function and act as a key contributor to talent forums, proactively managing outcomes.


Technical leadership

  • Solve unique and complex problems that have a broad impact on the business in the areas of electrification, virtual product development & analytics, telemetry & control systems and other novel strategic R&D activities.
  • Seek to continuously improve the technical performance of the function and focus on strengthening McLaren Applied’s product quality through engineering excellence.
  • Enhance and build upon our IP portfolio, encouraging the function to actively generate, identify, and contribute novel ideas.
  • Promote and foster technical thought leadership through externally-facing communications and events.
  • Be recognised by clients and peers as a trusted and reliable domain expert, with key involvement in project milestone and gate reviews.
  • Openly share ideas and invite collaboration with others at all levels of McLaren Applied. Seek to build and strengthen technical relationships across McLaren Group whilst being conscious of commercial sensitivities.
  • Act as a mentor and role model, sharing knowledge and expertise outside of own area.


Business leadership

  • Curate the function’s strategy, interpreting complex business information and applying strategic thinking to inform decision-making within the function.
  • Forecast, monitor and manage overall function costs, spend, revenue recognition and overall resourcing.
  • Provide regular expert support to Product Management and Product Marketing in the development of long-term technology roadmaps.
  • Develop and nurture strong working relationships both externally and internally with Sales, Product Marketing and Product Management functions, and other key decision makers across the business.
  • Act as a key stakeholder in new and emerging opportunities for the business and R&D processes for the function, maintaining an awareness of programme schedules.


Skills and Experience   

  • Master’s degree in a Mechanical Engineering-related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer, with an active interest in developments within the profession.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical engineering first principles and product design methodologies, with experience of developing concepts into functional prototypes, through to high volume manufactured products.
  • Knowledge of tools associated with virtual product development, specifically engineering numerical analysis techniques, such as FEA, CFD, Thermal, to drive optimised design and simulation methodologies.
  • Specific experience in composite and metallic design combined with materials knowledge, with emphasis on high performance and lightweight structural materials.
  • Demonstrable experience managing product development to achieve sign off criteria for performance, reliability, serviceability and quality.
  • Substantial international client-facing experience, with a proven capability, to professionally represent technical project teams, the company and brand.
  • Ability to present a portfolio of innovative engineering designs for which you have been responsible.
  • Significant experience in leading and developing multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Experience of interpreting company strategic goals and translating them into team-level objectives.
  • Demonstrable ability to identify, explore and interpret factors affecting the function’s strategic direction and taking decisive and effective action to ensure best outcomes for all.
  • Commercially astute having extensive experience of forming and maintaining strategically relevant client partnerships and navigating associated business commercial processes.
