McLaren Special Operations create cars around an owner’s precise tastes, and provide everything from bespoke customisation options through to building ultra-exclusive limited-edition or one-off breath-taking models.

Recently the MSO Engineering team has helped produce MSO X –  10 sportscars that emulate the look and feel of a McLaren 570S GT4 race car but are fully road-legal and MSO R; A bespoke commission of 2 cars specifically created around one customers specification.

Our customers want the best in Automotive bespoke content and to ensure we can meet their expectations we are looking for a Head of Engineering to deliver truly breathtaking products.

Purpose of the role:

As Head of Engineering in MSO, you will be responsible for leading, developing and championing the MSO Engineering department to deliver all MSO vehicle lines and projects. 

We are looking for the Head of Engineering to help MSO take the next step and ensure McLaren is the leader in Automotive bespoke content.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Ensure all Engineering activities are delivered to plan and consistent with the McLaren Development Process (MDP)
  • Define future technical strategies and associated technology roadmaps
  • Lead initiatives to promote MSO Engineering capabilities with internal stakeholders and external parties
  • Line manage a team of subject experts to deliver MSO Defined (line fit options), Limited Edition programmes, Bespoke commissions and Heritage projects
  • Investigate and drive innovative solutions to continuously improve the delivery of the Engineering department
  • Provide ad-hoc technical and decision-making support to all Design and Vehicle Engineering activities
  • Lead the team to deliver all Engineering targets in line with KPI’s and milestones set by MDP including BOM, investment including internal and outsourced labour and D&D, tooling costs and attribute targets
  • Ensure Project Timing plan is achieved, i.e. design releases, DFMEAs, DVPs, Risk Assessment Tool and other relevant gateway deliverables

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Automotive knowledge is essential and having a good level of commercial acumen and the ability to understand the broader business context of automobile production, marketing, sales and aftersales
  • Programme delivery experience within a niche engineering function
  • Proven track record of leading a high performance cross functional team
  • Extensive experience of automotive design and development
  • Excellent systems design and development knowledge
  • Proven problem solving and change management capability
  • Experience of high and niche vehicle (low volume) programmes
