The Functional Safety Team is involved in the definition, implementation, integration, test and operations of all safety related products we deliver as a business. 

The team is active across multiple domains within McLaren Applied. The team has successfully deployed safety critical products for autonomous vehicles, avionics and automotive control systems, and hybrid drive applications. 

As the member of the Functional Safety Team, you will have the opportunity and freedom to work directly with our customers, to design, architect, implement and test safety critical systems which are at the forefront of technological development. 

As the leader of the Functional Safety Team you will define and direct all of McLaren Applied’s functional safety activities across multiple domains, from micro mobility to automotive and avionic domains.

Purpose of the Role

Involved in the safety lifecycle across complex projects; from eliciting safety requirements, performing safety and failure analyses, through to test & verification planning. 

Developing concepts by working closely with the Systems, Hardware, Software and Test teams. Provide technical authority and review of safety related work products from other disciplines and contributes to the planning and implementation of projects, bids and proposals, accountable to the Engineering Managers. 

Defining to Functional Safety best practice in McLaren Applied and working closely with other disciplines to promote to continuously improve the practice and processes. 

Principal Accountabilities

  • Define and maintain companywide functional safety policy
  • Ensure that the safety culture within McLaren Applied is maintained through effective thought leadership
  • Define and maintain the Functional Safety Plan for all McLaren Applied’s products
  • Define and maintain the Safety Case for all McLaren Applied’s products
  • Define and maintain the Functional Safety processes and procedures and ensure their effective execution
  • Conduct internal ISO 26262 training activities
  • Lead and facilitate the definition and negotiation of the development interface agreements (DIA) with suppliers and customers
  • Lead the development of safety requirements and associated architecture across disciplines
  • Creation and review of work products to meet the requirements of ISO 26262 and other similar standards
  • Working with disciplines such as systems, hardware, software and test to define and document their architecture and activities
  • Conduct inductive and deductive safety and failure analyses such as FMEA, DFA, FTA, FMEDA, HAZOP at all architectural levels
  • Ensure the verification and testing activities for Systems, Software and Hardware work products are suitable to ensure the functional safety of McLaren Applied’s products

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • First class degree or upper 2nd Engineering degree or other highly quantitative field (or equivalent experience) 
  • Experience of leading functional safety activities for products and processes within a company
  • Ability to communicate with independent safety assessors and auditors, providing structured, compelling and defensive arguments
  • Experience of working in a formal safety management environment, e.g. ISO 26262 
  • Experience of developing systems, hardware and software concepts for safety related embedded systems 
  • Experience of formal development processes descriptions such as A-SPICE, CMMI etc
  • Familiarity with Model Based Systems Engineering, SysML/UML 
  • Strong knowledge of failure analyses methodologies such as FMEA, FTA, DFA, FMEDA etc 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent technical knowledge
  • Able to quickly build rapport with peers and stakeholders
  • Able to tactfully challenge without alienating
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills and attention to detail 
  • Strong understanding of quality management such as issue, change and configuration management.


  • Chartership with relevant professional body (IET, IMechE etc) highly desirable 
  • Experience with requirements, modelling, configuration and change management and associated tooling such as SharePoint, Polarion, Enterprise Architect, JIRA etc
  • Experience with other relevant standards such as IEC 61508, A-SPICE, ISO 9001, DO178, EN 5012x, ISO 21434, ISO 21448 etc 
  • Experience with failure analysis tools such as APIS-IQ, Isograph Reliability Workbench FT+.
