The Role:

The role of Engineering Manager is to manage and lead a multidisciplinary team to deliver motorsports control systems core applications and toolsets for application development.You will have proficiency in MATLAB Simulink model-based embedded control systems and will work closely alongside Product Managers, Project Managers and Technical Authority to understand and deliver against our product lines and our customer’s requirements.


The Engineering Manager will actively manage the team to empower and foster delivery, setting clear objectives. plans and delivers through Agile/SCRUM methodogolies, sprint planning, backlog task grooming, effort estimations, burndown and velocity charts. 


In this role you will have 10+ direct reports and will need to lead a team with several different technical goals. You will understand key processes within the function and people management practices and will understand the importance of diversity within the team. There will also be some travel invovled.



  • Strong people management skills, including setting clear goals, objectives and expected behaviours, agreeing development plans and regularly reviewing performance.
  • Develop team members in relation to their performance in the team, regularly reviewing progress and undertaking performance reviews.
  • Allocateing resources and forecasting resource and capability requirements for projects, liaising with key stakeholders.
  • Set and organise the priorities and direction for the team.  Distribute work in line with project/ business requirements.
  • Plan and schedule multiple concurrent projects (may work alongside Project Managers) in line with business imperatives.
  • Anticipate and resolve problems in area of work.
  • Ensures solutions/ systems meet functional/sector safety standards, and are completed to quality standards, timescales and budget.
  • Continuously improving processes, standards and tools for the benefit of the business and its clients.
  • Managing and communicating internal/external stakeholder requirements, resolving issues and making decisions in line with business plans; ensuring own understanding and that of the team.
  • May work directly with clients/ prospects, independently and/or alongside the Business Development, Product Management, Principal Engineers and Chief Engineers.
  • Provide guidance on different approaches to development and delivery of solutions/systems that could yield better results, actively mentor staff to increase quality.



  • First class degree or upper 2nd in Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Mathematics, or other highly quantitative field (or equivalent experience).


Skills and Experience:


  • Proficient in MATLAB Simulink model-based embedded control systems.
  • Understanding of embedded control fundamentals
  • Source Code control (preferably GIT)
  • Agile advocate with a thorough understanding of Agile software development methodologies, values and procedures (e.g. backlog, burndown, velocity, etc.)
  • Proven track record of delivery.
  • Motivates and enables team to deliver.
  • Familiar with sensors and actuators typically used in motorsport applications
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent technical knowledge.



  • Control systems development for motorsport applications.
  • Familiarity with motorsport control systems, their components, configurations and toolsets (e.g. control system architectures, GDE, System Monitor, sensors & actuators)
  • Advantageous to have experience with McLaren Applied Technologies suite of tools such as GDE, System Monitor and Atlas
  • Continuous integration and software development lifecycle.
  • C/C++ software development
  • Hardware/Software in the loop test methodologies
