Engineering Manager - Commercial Control Units

As an Engineering Manager you will manage and lead a multidisciplinary team to deliver Commercial Control Systems core applications and toolsets for application development, working closely alongside Product Manager, Project Manager and Technical Authority to understand and deliver against  product lines and our customer’s requirements.


You will actively manage  the team to empower and foster delivery, seting  clear team objectives and plans and delivering through Agile/SCRUM methodologies, sprint planning, backlog task grooming, effort estimations, burndown and velocity charts.



  • Strong people management skills, including setting clear goals, objectives and expected behaviours, agreeing development plans and regularly reviewing performance.
  • Develop team members in relation to their performance in the team, regularly review progress and undertake performance reviews.
  • Allocate resources and forecast resource and capability requirements for projects, liaising with key stakeholders.
  • Set and organise the priorities and direction for the team.  Distribute work in line with project/ business requirements.
  • Plan and schedule multiple concurrent projects (may work alongside Project Managers) in line with business imperatives.
  • Anticipate and resolves problems in area of work.
  • Ensure solutions/ systems meet functional/sector safety standards, are completed to quality standards, timescales and budget.
  • Continuously improves processes, standards and tools for the benefit of the business and its clients.
  • Manage and communicate internal/external stakeholder requirements, resolve issues and makes decisions in line with business plans; ensures own understanding and that of the team.
  • Manage, deliver and take responsibility for work that is outside core domain.
  • May work directly with clients/ prospects, independently and/or alongside the Business Development, Product Management, Principal Engineers and Chief Engineers.
  • Provide guidance on different approaches to development and delivery of solutions/systems that could yield better results, actively mentors staff to increase quality.
  • Understand key processes within function and people management practices such as performance and absence management, recruitment and learning analysis and health and safety management. 
  • Understands importance of diversity within team.



  • First class degree or upper 2nd in relevant discipline, or equivalent experience, plus appropriate professional qualification.


Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience: .

  • Understands skills and experience of team members and key processes in relevant business area.
  • Ability to manage workload across a diverse multi-disciplinary team.
  • Agile advocate with a thorough understanding of Agile software development methodologies, values and procedures (e.g. backlog, burndown, velocity, etc.)
  • Understands key processes within function and people management practices such as performance and absence management, recruitment and learning analysis and health and safety management.  Understands importance of diversity within team.
  • Leads the team in the delivery of tasks and is an effective team member. Mentors team members.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent technical knowledge.
  • Prioritises, plans and coordinates activities across skills sets to maximise resource utilisation.
  • Experience within Control Systems Engineering
  • Thorough understanding of the design process from concept and requirements capture through design, implementation and test, ideally within a ISO26262 / IEC61508 project environment
  • Model based software development in MATLAB-Simulink, ASCET or equivalent
  • Knowledge of AUTOSAR work flow, configuration tools, and standards
  • Programming and scripting languages - C, C++, VHDL, Perl, ANT, Python.
  • Data Analysis Software - MATLAB, Simulink or equivalent.
  • Software Testing – Verification and Validation
  • MIL, SIL, PIL and HIL test methodologies
  • Data analysis tools – e.g. MATLAB, ATLAS, Midas
  • Software Version Control and Configuration Management – SVN, Mercurial, GIT, SourceSafe / Team Foundation Server
  • Practical electronics experience (hardware design, implementation and test)
  • Functional Safety Engineering experience to ISO26262 / IEC61508 or equivalent
