Our High Performance Components team has been producing cutting edge sensors for Formula 1 for decades.  An F1 car uses hundreds of sensors to monitor performance parameters including temperatures, pressures, torque, suspension positions, speed, driver states and driver inputs.  In addition to sensors, this team also develops actuator drivers and alternators for motorsport, hypercar, and aerospace applications.  

Durability, accuracy and minimal weight are what competitors demand and expect, and which the McLaren name represents.

McLaren Applied was selected by the FIA to be the trusted sole provider of F1 engine pressure and temperature sensors for all teams from 2018.  We are also one of two approved sensor suppliers to competitors in North America’s IndyCar series.  We answered a call several years ago to standardise parts in order to control costs for competitors. We offer a family of excellent products that are feature-rich and second to none in terms of quality.

McLaren Applied is an independent entity from McLaren Racing and this has allowed us to deliver products that are used widely across F1 teams as well as IndyCar, NASCAR, Moto GP, and other motorsport series. Our products include engine temperature and pressure sensors, torque sensors, tyre pressure sensors, thermal-camera-based sensor systems, fuel injection drivers, and smart alternators.  

Our products feature advanced mechanical, electronic, communication and software technology. As leader of the Engineering team, you will have the opportunity and freedom to work directly with many of the world’s best motorsport teams supporting the development, customisation and improvement of our product offerings.

 

Purpose of the Role

The Engineering Manager:

  • Leads this multi-disciplinary Engineering team developing sensors, actuator drivers and alternators.  This team includes mechanical, electronic and embedded software engineers, and is supported by other specialists. 
  • Is accountable for delivering the agreed product development roadmap which has typically has multiple projects running concurrently.  
  • Has the freedom to negotiate roadmaps and delivery commitments and organise how the Engineering team develops and delivers new products.
  • Is accountable for hiring, managing, leading, supporting and developing the engineers within the team.
  • Reports to our Engineering Director and is a member of the Applied Engineering Leadership Team.
  • Works with a Product Manager, commercial staff (including account managers), production leads, plus has direct contact with some of our customers and motorsport bodies to understand how well our products are performing.

 

Principal Accountabilities

  • Leading, supporting, and developing a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, from mechanical, electronics and embedded software disciplines.
  • Delivering new product development projects for sensors, drivers, and alternators.  
  • You will be accountable for making and meeting delivery commitments and empowered to organise the team and projects to deliver effectively.
  • Ensuring your team effectively transfer new products into production by partnering with production staff.
  • Working with customers to get insight into product performance and understanding how products could be improved.
  • Supporting the Product Manager for your products and enabling the engineering team to influence the product roadmap.
  • Supporting commercial team members, including advising and supporting bid work.
  • Planning and executing strategies to improve product development performance.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience

We’re looking for the rare combination of relevant engineering experience, the ability to engage and lead a high-performing team, and capability to own and improve our designs and help shape how new product development gets done.  

Someone who will create successful relationships within the company and do a great job of representing our brand to our customers.

Batchelors degree in one of the mechatronics disciplines, or equivalent practical experience.

Experience leading an Engineering team that has delivered similar innovative products is preferred.

Experience solving the project challenges that arise in developing novel mechatronic solutions.
