Our team
The Control Systems Team, based within the Electronic Systems Department, is responsible for embedded software and firmware that customers use to interface to electronic systems used in motorsport. The team has a long history of delivering products to customers in the top-tier of this sector including Formula 1, WEC, NASCAR, and IndyCar. The team has also expanded into new markets including wearable technology and industrial production lines.

The key strength of the team is its ability to work to rapidly to research and understand new technologies and how they apply to the market. We then empower customers to make best use of these technologies in novel applications by sharing our understanding. We use a range of tools including large micro-processor systems, microcontrollers and FPGA.
The role
As a Team Lead you will support team activities relating to the development and customer use of MAT products. This role is a reflection of MAT’s commitment to provide customers with cutting-edge and ever improving solutions from the MAT products they use. In this role you will interact with a variety of stakeholders ranging from internal business units managing customer projects through to direct customer support for specific components using the Control System Team’s software. A key responsibility to the role is to ensure that the operational quality is balanced against improvement of product functionality. The team lead will manage interactions with customers and determine what critical actions must be taken to resolve problems and what avenues exist to undertake product improvement activities within the business.
You will:

  • Lead a team of direct reports (5-10 approx)
  • Directly manage engineers and perform performance reviews in line with company processes.
  • Be responsible for team member development (both professional and pastoral).
  • Support team members by acting as a technical expert in the appropriate field.
  • Manage recruitment of new engineers in line with the department manager’s goals. This will include CV review, interviewing and support of company recruitment programmes.
  • Share company vision and ensure that relevance to team activity is understood and communicated.
  • Consider group requirements and toolsets, and feed these needs to the departmental manager.
  • Support business development and Bid-Review process when required.
  • Support and drive continuous improvement both independently and with support of the department manager.

  • Produce estimation for effort to produce solutions
  • Manage work-breakdowns and task execution
  • Ensure adherence to the team’s development process
  • Provide solutions within the resources allowed

Skills and expertise

Essential

  • First class degree or upper 2nd in Engineering, Electronics, Mathematics, Operational Research, Computer Science, or other highly quantitative field (or equivalent experience).
  • Programming C/C++ in an embedded environment
  • Experience working with RTOS software development. eg Integrity, FreeRTOS, RTEMS, VxWorks, Linux embedded (kernel development and debugging, Yocto, Buildroot, low level drivers)
  • Version Control eg Mercurial, GIT, SVN

Desirable

  • Experience of working in an automotive or motorsport environment
  • Scripting and build script languages eg Python, Perl, ANT
  • Analytical Software eg MATLAB, Simulink
  • Application development in desktop environment Windows, Linux.
  • Communication interfaces; CAN, Ethernet, FlexRay, PCI, SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, USB
  • Electronic hardware design, reading schematics, device datasheets
  • Microsoft Suite of productivity tools
  • Embedded project experience, i.e. Embedded Development Kit, BeagleBone, Raspberry Pi, Arduino

Recruitment process

  • If your application is successful, you’ll be invited for a phone interview with one of our experienced technical recruiters.
  • If our recruiter believes you’re suitable for the role, you will then be invited for a phone interview with senior members from the engineering team which will last approximately 30 minutes.
  • The final stage includes a face to face interview at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey. This is usually with the Control Systems Manager, and a Senior Engineer or a Team Leader. The interview will involve a series of skills based technical questions and problem solving or design challenges.
