The Role:

We are looking to add an Electronic Systems Product Manager to our Automotive Business Unit to lead our product and business strategy in the area of advanced automotive control systems. McLaren Applied Technologies has been active in this space for over 25 years and there has never been a time which presents so much challenge and opportunity to the industry with the current moves towards ever more complex on-board control systems, autonomy and connected vehicles.

These industry trends provide great opportunities for McLaren Applied Technologies, which has a strong and expanding portfolio of IP and we are seeking a world class automotive professional to navigate this complex market and provide the best outcome for McLaren Applied Technologies and our customers.

  • STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT: Support the Business Unit Director in developing business unit strategy and identifying target customers and engagement plans for new customers. Support the development and refinement of business unit specific propositions aligned with wider business capabilities and market need.
  • BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT: Proactively pursue and develop new business opportunities aligned to business unit strategy, develop proposals (also supported by others within the business) and drive through negotiation to successful contract award. Support management of the business development pipeline for Electronic Systems and help to coordinate and prioritise activities to meet the needs of the business whilst also coordinating with product development roadmap.
  • ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT: Maintain technical oversight of existing projects within the business unit and identify new opportunities with existing customers.
  • PRODUCT MANAGEMENT: Manage and grow the product portfolio in the core automotive market. Manage the product lifecycle, from strategic planning to tactical activities:
    • Lead on the development of product strategy that identifies a roadmap towards a portfolio of innovative and profitable products for the market.
    • Individual product conceptual design and requirements definition to meet market needs. Development of business cases to support internal investment requirements with supporting documentation such as financial forecasts, product pricing (support by Commercial Lead), and business models (again in consultation with Commercial Lead and/or Business Unit Director).
    • Promote initiatives to facilitate continual improvement of products once they are in the market.
    • Identify pre-requisite technologies and capabilities for new innovations and support the setting of an aligned technology/capability agenda with the CTO office.
    • Identify partners that could provide new technologies or capabilities aligned with product strategy and develop and manage relationships with partners.
    • Work within the business unit to encourage and support the development of new business opportunities that are also aligned with the product roadmap.
    • Maintain technical oversight of active product developments.
    • Working closely with the Commercial Lead to maximise profitability through value based pricing.
    • Perform all product management activities in accordance with the framework set out by the central product management function.
  • MARKETING: Support development of the marketing plan for the business unit and engage in a range of marketing activities to grow awareness in the industry.
  • Act as a key interface between the business unit and the technical team(s), in particular, those responsible for developing our Automotive Electronic Systems. Support technical teams with forward looking view on technical resource requirements against the product development roadmap and BD pipeline.
  • Work within the processes and frameworks defined by the business and provide constructive feedback to support the continual improvement of such processes, particularly as aligned with the specific requirements of the business unit.


  • Having worked in the Automotive industry, ideally both in road car OEM and tier 1 suppliers, you will have demonstrable and relevant technical background in the field of Automotive Electronic Systems, having worked in a technical capacity. You will be adept at identifying and developing complex technical solutions to meet new business opportunities.
  • You will have a strong technical understanding of electronic systems (hardware and software), ISO26262, automotive standards and toolsets, communications links and connectivity solutions.
  • You will have a good knowledge of the Automotive market.
  • You will have excellent business development skills with ability to develop technical scope following initial contact, elicit non-obvious client needs and shape a proposition to match, based on technology at a range of levels of maturity. Essential to successfully generate new technical business relationships and maximise the opportunity from existing ones through identifying and exploiting every opportunity and matching with a maturing range of products and propositions.
  • You will have excellent communication, interpersonal and written skills in both client facing and internal situations. It is essential that you can discuss complex technical systems with senior client representatives and build strong long term and in-depth client and partner relationships, in parallel with maintaining excellent relationships internally to both achieve buy-in to new opportunities.
  • You will have excellent technical skills in automotive electronic systems and systems engineering. It is essential you can both generate business around complex technology propositions as well as build and maintain credibility with customers, partners and internal teams.
  • You will be a self-motivated team player with ability to work closely and openly both with peers in the business unit as well as internal teams providing pre-sales technical support and ongoing programme management and execution. It is essential that you can contribute and add value to a rapidly growing organisation which relies on a-political team work to achieve results way beyond industry standard productivity levels.

Education, Skills and Experience:

You will have:

  • Experience in business development and product development for technology businesses internationally.
  • Proven track record at technical solution sales including reliance on partner management.
  • Experience at technical scoping with partners and customers alike for a range of deal types.
  • Domain experience in the automotive industry.
  • Discipline experience in Automotive Electronic Systems.
  • Educated to degree level – 2:1 a minimum requirement in an engineering discipline.
