Our Group

The Design Group sits in the Office of the Chief Technology Officer. We collaborate with Product Marketing, Product Management, Chief Engineers and our Engineering Teams, to bring together a deep understanding of the what is desirable with the create cutting edge, commercially viable products, services and solutions. The Design Group is formed by three key teams; Insight & Strategy, Product Design and Design Engineering. We pride ourselves on collaboration across the group and wider business and despite this role reporting into the Insight & Strategy Team, we expect all our designers to comfortably stretch between Strategy, Product and Engineering.

Insight & Strategy

Transforms market, technology and user insights into design directions and business opportunities.

Product Design

Transforms design direction and insights into digital & physical product and service propositions, and concept designs.

Design Engineering

Delivers technically feasible data-led design solutions.

The Role             

You will work closely with others in the Design Group to gather data, translate insight, identify opportunities, build value propositions, develop product concepts and user experiences, and define innovation processes and strategies.

The role reports to the Insight and Strategy Team Lead within the Design Group. The position will give you the opportunity to work on a number of diverse projects. With guidance and coaching from senior members of the team you will be an integral member of the team to deliver work on large projects whilst having the opportunity to lead the insight and strategy on some smaller projects.

Role Accountabilities

  • Design of innovation processes, gathering of data and insight, development of opportunities, concepts, value propositions and user experiences and the definition of design and innovation strategies.
  • Produces clear and compelling communication that captures the process and output of work
  • Effective communication with other disciplines and functions, supporting cross functional collaboration and interaction
  • Consistently delivers high quality results by following established processes to effectively deliver insight and strategy.
  • Supports the creation of proposals, whilst recommending new methods and the development of existing processes to improve our current best practise
  • Accurately plans and accounts for time, anticipating and highlighting any potential impacts to work flow
  • Identifies barriers and appropriately escalates concerns that could have an impact on the quality of work
  • When conducting research, supports the assessment and documentation of risk where necessary
  • Develops and delivers relevant internal training to the rest of the team
  • Participates in Design Group and Insight and Strategy Team activities to foster and grow the team culture
  • Represent the McLaren brand, reporting and presenting to clients, partners and colleagues at all levels of the business – as well as research agencies and partners

Skills and Experience                  

  • BSc, BA, MA, BEng in Industrial Design, Product Design, UX Design, Interaction Design, Service Design, Design management or equivalent creative-technical degree or equivalent industry experience.
  • 2-3 years working as Design researcher / Design Strategist / UX Researcher, with proven track record of planning and conducting qualitative research to confidently provide design insight
  • Advanced knowledge of design thinking methodologies and user centric approaches
  • Experience in design research, research analysis, qualitative insights, concept design and technical, commercial and operational considerations
  • High sensitivity to human needs and an ability to translate behavioural insight into technical opportunities and optimised physical interfaces and solutions.
  • Demonstrates a high level of creativity and innovation, with the ability to understand and translate complex challenges into elegant and smart solutions.
  • An ability to balance creative and intuitive thought processes with analytical and logical decision making
  • Ability to create (and support the creation of) prototypes and proof of concept
  • An ability to build coherent and eloquent points of view and produce compelling visual presentations
  • Appreciation of brand value and working to high design standards.
  • Benefits from an existing knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Mac OS and Microsoft Office

Environment     

Design is based in our new office in the centre of Woking; we have a newly designed space for innovation with great connection to central London (5min walk to Woking station & 30min train ride into London Waterloo).

Core working hours are Monday to Friday and with flexibility on start and end times to total 40 hours. We encourage flexible working to enable a sustainable balance between work and home lives.

Some domestic and international travel may be required.
