Design Engineer - McLaren Special Operations

McLaren Special Operations (MSO) is a division of McLaren Automotive, responsible for the design, development and delivery of personalised and bespoke vehicle commissions, performance details and options, as well as overseeing and ensuring McLaren legacy vehicles remain road worthy and up to date.  MSO products and services represent world class McLaren offerings and in doing so provides McLaren owners with virtually limitless possibilities to tailor a car exactly to their needs and tastes.

As part of our continued growth and desire to deliver world class bespoke content, we are looking for a Design Engineer to join our Design Engineering team and share our passion for innovation, performance and craftsmanship across everything we do.

Purpose of the role:

As a Design Engineer within MSO, you will be responsible for delivering the future of MSO defined and Bespoke content. This can be anything from a carbon fibre louvres to working on a one off bespoke commission.

We want you to come up with innovative and creative design solutions that ultimately appear on our vehicles and set a new standard in automotive bespoke options.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Delivering full component and system design solutions to required technical performance, weight, cost (BoM and Investment), quality and timing targets
  • Create and author design guides to assist in creating McLaren’s library of best practice
  • Understand and support the package constraints for the components. Working with suppliers, Concept teams & DMU (Digital Mock Up) to ensure components and systems meet technical and package targets and to deliver detailed designs on time to predetermined quality, cost and weight targets, within DFM (Design For Manufacture) requirements
  • Optimise design solutions to support vehicle assembly & service requirements
  • Collaborate with other designers and the component supplier to achieve efficient, innovative and lightweight designs
  • Ensure design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets in NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness), ergonomic, durability, visibility & performance related attributes
  • Ensure the components interface seamlessly to the wider car including structural interfaces & body panels
  • BOM definition and management to include identifying cost & weight reduction initiatives to deliver targets

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Education to degree level preferred
  • Proficient in solid modelling and surfacing using a 3D CAD system – CATIA V5 preferred
  • Experience of designing carbon fibre components highly desirable
  • Excellent feasibility assessment of design proposals, including design for manufacture and DFMEA’s
  • Confident and proficient in the art of working to pull together Styling & Surfacing to deliver robust and manufacturable designs
  • Confident in analysing and overcome technical challenges with workable and innovative engineering solutions
