Correlation Aerodynamicist

Purpose of the Role:

To maximise the quality of aerodynamic correlation between CFD, wind tunnel and track, in order to enhance the hit-rate of our aerodynamic design tools on the performance of the race car.

Role Dimensions:

  • Sits within the correlation group, reporting to the Principal Aerodynamicist and guided by an Aerodynamics Project Leader.
  • Flexibility in working hours is required (some evenings and during selected race weekends).
  • This role is predominantly factory based but some travel may be required.

  • All Aerodynamicists in the department.
  • Aerodynamicists from the Aerodynamic Performance group.
  • CFD methodologists.
  • Racing Technology group.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Perform detailed analysis of CFD, wind tunnel and track data to evaluate and improve correlation between them. This will include but not be limited to force data, rakes, PIV, surface pressures, probes and flow visualisation.
  • Devise and prepare correlation programmes for the wind tunnel – define test lists, prepare configurations etc. Support the test, analyse results and report back afterwards. When appropriate work with other aerodynamicists to ensure this is done to the required standard.
  • Devise and submit correlation cases for CFD, analyse and report back.
  • Build an understanding of the track environment and when required, devise, prepare and support correlation experiments at the track.
  • Developing novel aerodynamic analysis techniques to enhance our understanding of aerodynamic phenomena on the car
  • Work with appropriate design teams to minimise the intrusiveness and complexity of correlation equipment (e.g. rakes) and to help optimise the efficiency of our wind tunnel and track testing

​​​​​​​Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • High level of aerodynamic expertise with a degree in a relevant subject.
  • Experience in both CFD and wind tunnel disciplines; trackside would be a benefit.
  • Demonstrate good knowledge of flow structure characteristics and flow breakdown mechanisms.
  • Good data driven analysis skills.
  • Experience of planning and organising projects to pre-agreed targets.
