  • Lead the translation of 2D themes into breath-taking physical properties “that tell the visual story of their function”.
  • Coach, develop, inspire & appraise the clay team.
  • Deliver concept & production ready surface solutions meeting design intent and compatible with concurrent engineering exercises to the McLaren Design Process (MDP) & program timing.



  • Manage exterior & interior clay project teams delivering to the business’ requirements.
  • Attend weekly Design Review(s) and minute feedback/actions to clay team.
  • Plan workloads. Manpower and timing of projects with Design Operations Manager G0-G4.
  • Maintain visual timing plan within studio.
  • Work within the wider CMD, CAS, Clay & Engineering teams; to deliver feasible design solutions to Function Group representatives and Senior Management for sign-off.
  • Reconcile design intent, quality & manufacturing feasibility with aerodynamics, engineering and commercial requirements.
  • Communicate progress and critical issues to the Design Operations Manager, Chief Designer & Design Director.
  • Plan, prepare & produce high impact content for senior presentations.
  • Conduct performance reviews for the clay team.
  • Attend surface reviews as required and action next steps.
  • Offer input into the creation and update of design standards & process.
  • Be a role model, live the values and communicate the design pillars to other departments.



  • Education in a design, modelling or pattern making background preferred.
  • Excellent verbal & written presentation skills.
  • Excellent physical modelling and surface design skills (hard modelling and clay).
  • Thorough understanding of the design process.
  • Work NC (milling and cutter path experience).
  • PC literate. Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Led multiple exterior and interior projects G0-G4.
  • Excellent leadership and coaching skills.
  • Excellent understanding of ergonomics, aerodynamic principles & legal requirements.
