Purpose of the role:

The Motorsport Chief Engineer will provide technical leadership of all McLaren Automotive motorsport programmes. This role will be responsible for delivering motorsport projects, managing the design and development of all projects, managing the customer technical support team and developing technical relationships with regulatory bodies such as the FIA.

Principal accountabilities:


  • Work with the Motorsport Programme Manager to support High level plan

Programme Tasks:

  • Work with the Motorsport Programme Manager to develop and approve all motorsport vehicle specification
  • Work with Design team to finalize specification targets and high level concept for the vehicle.
  • Work with the regulatory bodies such as the FIA to ensure motorsport vehicles comply with homologation requirements.

Vehicle Design, Test & Development:

  • Definition of the design and development planning to deliver outstanding motorsport products
  • Lead vehicle technical design to meet all programme and technical targets.
  • Work with Design team to ensure the highest design integrity.
  • Work with defined high level vehicle targets and overall vehicle concept to evolve a detailed design solution in the CAD environment.
  • Ensure vehicle styling always respects defined technical requirements.
  • Investigate component efficiencies across multiple motorsport categories.
  • Manage vehicle development to achieve sign off criteria for performance, reliability and serviceability

Customer Support:

  • To build and manage the customer technical support team
  • To oversee fault management systems.
  • To manage technical documentation and bulletins communicated to customers.

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Experience in the motorsport industry, either racing or providing world class customer support
  • Computer literate – Microsoft Office suite.
  • Knowledge of Electrical Diagnostic Systems and Hardware.
  • Knowledge of Modern Vehicle operating systems (EHB, ABS, HVAC, Engine, and Transmissions)

  • Must have a flexible approach to working hours, travel requirements and adaptability to changing and multiple priorities
