IT Category Manager

Purpose of the Role

The IT Category Manager is to be responsible for managing the IT sourcing strategy and execution of strategic and complex IT sourcing projects through the full procurement lifecycle.

The IT Category Manager role forms part of the Supplier & Commercial Assurance team which is the commercial heart of McLaren Information Technology. The team consists of several complementary functions including a Category Buyer, a dedicated Procure2Pay Team as well as SRM and Licence Management functions. In addition to the immediate team, the IT Category Manager will work closely with Project Mangers, Finance, Business stakeholders and the product and process owner within the Information Technology department.

Role Dimensions:        

  • Identify commercial opportunities and sourcing strategies within (and where appropriate across) the various McLaren companies in the Information Technology expenditure category
  • Support the Supplier & Commercial Assurance Manager in delivery of agreed strategic objectives in line with the Information Technology strategy and relevant Business Plans.
  • Act as liaison between McLaren and our suppliers, ensuring stakeholder requirements and concerns are fully understood and ensure these are fed back during the appropriate stages to the suppliers.
  • Ensure consistent procurement processes are undertaken to select the supplier that will provide optimum value and delivery for McLaren. This will include as appropriate, assessment of supplier risk, objective management of evaluation processes, negotiation and contract execution.
  • Execution of strategic and/or complex IT sourcing projects, leading through the full procurement lifecycle and handover to the Procure2Pay and SRM team members
  • The annual Information Technology annual spend is circa £12M and overall McLaren Information Technology annual spend is circa £30M.

Principal Accountabilities

  • To provide expertise and leadership in the Information Technology sourcing category, including market knowledge and sourcing best practice
  • To define and deliver the IT Category Plan and identify appropriate sourcing strategies on a rolling programme of areas to be addressed which generate benefits and achieve financial savings whilst mitigating risk for McLaren
  • To setup and execute strategic and/or complex sourcing projects through the full procurement lifecycle, including (senior) stakeholder management
  • To support the Category Buyer and SRM function by ensuring a seemless handover from the sourcing process into ongoing management
  • To assist, on request, with high value and/or complex contract renewals
  • To apply knowledge of contractual terms and conditions ensuring commercially attractive terms are agreed and contract spend remains in budget while mitigating risk in such terms
  • To apply knowledge of IT services to implement appropriate contractual safeguards, SLAs and other operational measures to ensure suppliers are incentivised to deliver a robust service
  • When required, will present updates to (senior) stakeholders on progress against the strategy and ongoing sourcing projects
  • Work collaboratively with all internal stakeholders (IT, Finance and Service Owners) throughout sourcing projects to ensure continued alignment of objectives
  • Coaching of junior team members
  • IT Category Manager will be responsible for all subcategories within the Information Technology category, including hardware, software, telecoms, network and (outsourced & professional) services.
  • Experience with lease contracts is an advantage. 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in setting up a category plan and/or sourcing strategy in a technology environment which focusses on both short term savings and risk mitigation as well as long term commercial opportunities
  • Demonstrated ability to lead negotiations and support in the development of negotiation strategies for large and complex projects and contracts projects in a technology sector, preferably IT
  • Well-developed negotiation skills in a IT/technology category underpinned by detailed contract knowledge, including complex service scope and SLAs
  • Ability to understand complex and abstract concepts (legal, technical and/or commercial) and being able to present the information in an informative and simplified manner; such that key decisions can be made quickly and objectively
  • Have a good understanding of license models of common IT software such as Microsoft and SAP.
  • Experience in working in a high-performance, fast-pace organization where individual performance is not only measured at the individual but also at the team level
  • Strong leadership qualities and excellent influencing and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate across various levels of the organization up to C-Level, and with leadership in Finance and IT functions
