CAD / PLM Manager

Manager of Design and Engineering Services (CAD/PLM).

Purpose of the Role:  

As Manager of Design and Engineering Services (CAD/PLM), you will be leading the Design and Engineering Services team who are responsible for McLaren’s business solutions and applications that our designers and engineers use to develop our products.

Key elements:

Team: Lead the growth and development of the team in order to maximise and empower the business value provided. This will be through the adoption of new technologies, enhances processes and new service offerings.

Strategy: Collaborating with the business units to secure investment, aligning to wider McLaren business needs, and ensuring that the services provide maximum value and are widely adopted.

Transformation: Creation and execution of the technical solution delivery for Design and Engineering Services (CAD/CAE/CAM/PDM/PLM), that delivers business improvements through project delivery and continuous development. 

Service Maintenance: Leading McLaren’s Design and Engineering Services team, by providing high levels of service responsiveness, solution integrity, availability and business continuity in line with agreed service levels.  


  • Lead a multi-disciplinary team comprising of permanent employees, contractors and managed service providers, to ensure cohesion, collaboration and delivery. Alongside empowering and developing individual's career progression.  
  • Establish and manage contracted services ensuring business value and delivery as required. 
  • Leading a cost-effective Design and Engineering Service within an ITIL-based application service delivery operation. 
  • Creating and implementing a flexible resourcing model to support project delivery.  
  • Develop a problem management approach across the team in finding root causes and permanent solutions, with a focus on medium and long term business benefit. 
  • Ownership of managing key financial targets and collaborating with key stakeholders to identify the operational and capital budgets for Design and Engineering Services used across McLaren.  
  • Ensure the team operate to a best practice use of tools, striving for simplicity over complexity when delivering changes to services and alignment to corporate strategies and product roadmaps. 
  • Cross-collaboration with budget holders and commercial teams to ensure application license models are understood and McLaren are compliant and resourced correctly as well as supporting contract negotiations and renewals. 
  • Ensure that McLaren’s Design and Engineering Services meet legal and audit requirements. 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Experience leading high performing teams in a complex environment 
  • Experience in managing suppliers (sourcing, onboarding, delivery, transition) 
  • Experience in personal and team development that empowers and harnesses cohesion. 
  • Experience in service delivery (ideally with awareness of the complete ITIL lifecycle) 
  • Experience in fiscal governance and creating business justifications. 
  • Ability to communicate at all levels and provide information to a diverse stakeholder group. 

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience: 

  • Project / programme management experience (Prince / Agile) 
  • Discrete Manufacturing Industry experience, desirably working with Design, Engineering and IT. 
  • Experience of CAD, PDM, PLM tools and processes
