McLaren Special Operations create cars around an owner’s precise tastes, and provide everything from bespoke customisation options through to building ultra-exclusive limited-edition or one-off breath-taking models.

Recently the MSO Engineering team has helped produce MSO X –  10 sportscars that emulate the look and feel of a McLaren 570S GT4 race car but are fully road-legal and MSO R; A bespoke commission of 2 cars specifically created around one customers specification.

Our customers want the best in Automotive bespoke content and to ensure we can meet their expectations we are looking for a Design Engineering Manager to deliver truly breath-taking products.

Purpose of the Role:

The Design Engineering manager will be responsible for overseeing both Interior and Exterior functions within McLaren Special Operations. You will be responsible for implementing and developing an high performing team responsible for delivering the future of McLaren bespoke commissions and defined content.

You will also be responsible for inputting and delivering the wider MSO strategy and be part of the Head of Engineering first line.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Lead the Design team to deliver all systems in line with targets, KPI’s and milestones, on multiple vehicle programmes
  • Work alongside Project Management Office and Vehicle Engineering to lead the design and development of current and future components and systems to ensure optimised vehicle performance
  • Develop a high level of technical competence within the in-house team in order to provide a significant and immediate DFM support to the design process
  • Ensure design for manufacture and compliance with global legislation and quality standards of all components and systems
  • Identify opportunities to aggressively reduce weight on all projects, including new and current technology. Pursue these design solutions through to successful adoption.
  • Support the Head of Engineering in leading all Design Engineering activities relating to defined technology areas and systems on vehicles  
  • Design leadership of specified systems. Responsible for overseeing and approving the Engineering integrity and design quality of specified systems through to production release in accordance with all project requirements.
  • Work with Project Team to develop, maintain and apply Component Road Maps.
  • Responsible for identifying and developing processes, systems and tools specific to improving Design Engineering efficiency

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Relevant Automotive experience within Interior or Exterior design in high-end or niche vehicles is highly desirable
  • Proficient in solid modelling and surfacing using a 3D CAD system – CATIA V5 preferred
  • Ability to create full detailed design drawings in accordance with BS 8888, including geometric tolerancing
  • Great attention to detail and an attitude to produce ‘right first time’ quality work
  • Good understanding of mechanical design requirements for typical automotive applications e.g. fastening systems, sealing solutions, manufacturing techniques
