Aerodynamics Performance Engineer

Purpose of the Role:

To improve the performance of the race car through analysis and presentation of aerodynamic data that influences the setup and aerodynamic development direction.

Role Dimensions:

  • Analyse and present aerodynamic data to influence aerodynamic development and car setup.
  • Maintain a current understanding of aerodynamic development direction.
  • Identify and report aerodynamic weaknesses to guide aerodynamic development.
  • Flexibility in working hours is required including evenings, nights and weekends.
  • Travel to tests and race events may be required.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Monitor aerodynamic data on the race car and report observations.
  • Analyse aerodynamic data to characterise the aerodynamic performance of the car and identify weaknesses and opportunities to improve car performance through setup and development.
  • Stay abreast of current car development and provide observations from track events.
  • Summarise observations from track, CFD and WT to correlation and assist in devising further experiments or alternative instrumentation as required.
  • Drive improvements in data analysis, tools and processes. Work towards standard analysis methodology.
  • Promote collaborative work when discussing results or defining development direction.
  • Support the Principal Aerodynamicist in maintaining a high level of motivation and achievement within the team.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrate an excellent knowledge of flow structure characteristics and flow breakdown mechanisms.
  • Have good data driven analysis skills.
  • Ability to extract meaningful data from a dataset and present in a clear concise manner.
  • Knowledge of race car data acquisition and limitations.
  • Knowledge of full scale simulation techniques and race car setup.
  • Experience in F1 Aerodynamics with particularly sound knowledge of the F1 wind tunnel testing environment and use of CFD.
  • Sound awareness of trades in race car setup with regards to aerodynamics, mechanical setup and tyres.
  • Sound awareness of overall car development programs.
  • A Master/PhD in relevant subject area.

  • Aptitude to learn from others and share knowledge with others.
